It’s never too late to add a little Christmas cheer to your garden and yard, and it is one of the favorite spaces for families to share their creative sides. Let’s face it, we all love to wander our neighborhoods checking out our communities holiday decorations and lights, don’t we? So put a little effort into decorating your garden for the holidays this year, and share that Christmas cheer with passerby and friends alike! Here are TGG’s top picks for creative DIY outdoor Christmas decorating ideas! Our feature photo, above, is from Christy at Our Southern Home. I love this holiday porch! She filled a lantern with Christmas balls and pine cones instead of candles, and that amazingly cool sled? Actually from her childhood! Any clear glass container will work for this impromptu holiday jumble that is so charming, from Bees Knees Bungalow… Perfect on a porch or patio… If you use candles, remember to leave the lid off while burning. Great use for old ornaments as well!
  Kristy’s Corner created these DIY outdoor Christmas trees… This is just what I need to go with my deer and pond!
  That Village House created this topiary out of old boxes and wrapping paper… Great idea, and so festive! You could also use Christmas vinyl tablecloths from the dollar store to wrap the boxes for more protections…Find out how she made these Christmas topiaries!
  Find out how Club Chica Circle created these pumpkin snow men, complete with snow paint! How much fun are these!
  Make this wood pallet Christmas tree with these instructions… Easy, and practically free, not to mention up-cycling!
  From Martha, this outdoor Christmas planter is simply ornaments glue gunned (is that a word?) together, and placed on a bed of greens…I would use some wire to attach it to the greens for wind protections.
  A Pretty Life in the Suburbs has a similar outdoor container, but I love how she amped up the color with her glitter  picks and ribbon!
  From HGTV,  this pallet tree was created from reclaimed barn siding cut in different lengths and attached to a 10-foot 4 x 4 with wood screws. Then they added the little globe style mini lights. Love the burlap wrapped “presents”!

What is more fun than carving pumpkins? Glad you asked! Carving pumpkins that are so cool, the neighbors stop by to ask you how you did it! Some of these are cool. Some are amazing. Some are cute. And some you just need a sense of humor for! (Those are my favorites!) Try these pumpkin carving projects you never thought of, and get a little squash silly, and have a little pumpkin play! Oh, my, cuteness. This DIY snail Jack O’Lantern (Photo above), from Brenda at ‘Alpha Mom’ should be the fav pumpkin of every 8 year old on the planet. So cute, so easy, so original! This DIY black & white Halloween topiary from Jen at ‘Tater Tots and Jello’ adds a little drama to any front porch! She used pre lighted craft pumpkins and a wood dowel. Pretty simple, right? BTW, make sure to visit her house tour at the top of her page!
  Ok, ‘Everyday Dishes’ has a more “grown up” version of a pumpkin project… Loving’ this DIY pumpkin ice bucket! How great would this be for a dinner with friends, and easy!
  Have mason jars taken over your Pinterest feed? Well, prepare yourself for one you haven’t seen before, and it has nothing to do with chalkboard paint. This “Boo!” jar pumpkin project from ‘Country Living’ is clever. And, they have a free printable pattern!
  More from ‘Country Living’, these spooky skeleton pumpkins have a tutorial complete with the template you need for drawing out the bones… And the instructions for attaching them together.
  From ‘Womans Day’, no, these aren’t pumpkins. We got that. But come on, could we leave this amount of cute out of this post? Nope. So here it is, the tutorial for the frog choir!
  Frogs and snails not your thing? How about this friendly elephant pumpkin from ‘Womans Day’? This just needs two pumpkins, and four minis…
  From ‘Popsugar‘, an Instagram user posted this photo of a pumpkin tower, and each one has a different facial expression. Easy way to add some interest to a grouping!
  Star Wars fan in the fam? This Death Star pumpkin by ‘Fantasy Pumpkins’ is one of those projects I can see a hubby or two spending some time on. Good instructions and step by step photos.
  Another one from Brenda at ‘Alpha Mom’, these Minecraft creeper green pumpkins are a gamer kid’s dream for Halloween! Good tutorial.
  Ok, this one is cool. ‘Erratic Project Junkie’ made this pumpkin massacre that is just fun! Ok, Halloween creepy fun, but fun! Great photos of the whole “killing field”.
  Ok, so about now, you’ve got a lot of DIY tutorials under your belt, how about we hook you up with some free pattern and template resources? So ‘Pumpkin Lady’ has hundreds of free pumpkin carving patterns for you, and tips on how to carve. Like 700. How do you choose???
  Got technology? Who doesn’t, right?  ‘Popsugar’ has these free Emoji pumpkin templates for those of us so inclined… Smiley face with a wink and a blush?
  Ok, now just a couple that we thought were really cool ideas. These are inspirational, no tutorials, but hopefully get your creative brain popping’! From ‘Style Me Pretty‘ and ‘Raylene Streuber Photography’, these white carved pumpkins are elegant and much less dramatic, but can be used for more than just Halloween!
  This cake pumpkin from ‘Deviant Art‘ might be perfect for the chef in the house!
  Lastly, we have this Mario Bros. pumpkin from ‘Flickr‘, which just goes to show you how much personality you can show off in a Jack O’Lantern!

With summer festivities and holidays rushing toward us, there is no better time to stop and think about how you want to enjoy your outdoor space this season. Me? I love Steve’s margaritas… and a glass of wine. A good craft beer in the heat of the summer works too! With outdoor spaces being extensions of the indoors in todays homes, making a DIY bar just seems like a dang good idea. And if you don’t prefer to serve alcohol, use your DIY bar to serve the best iced tea around! Our featured photo, above, is a tiled outdoor bar from ‘My Carpentry’. It has a full tutorial, with step by step drawings. What a great style for a mediterranean or exotic feel to your garden! I love the corrugated metal, it keeps this project looking updated. ‘Stacked Design’ has a tutorial with tons of photos for this pallet bar/table project. And stools!
  Cleverly Inspired’ shows you how to build an outdoor bar, using their deck railing! Great use of space!
  This DIY bar idea by ‘The Wedding Chicks’ is easy, vintage and fun! Just place boards across the rungs of a wood ladder…instant bar!
  Build a hanging outdoor bar with Sam Henderson from ‘Todays Nest’, for HGTV. This bar was made from old pallets, so its recycling too… great choice for small gardens.
  One of our Pinterest finds, using an old hutch as an outdoor bar. Cute and funky! You could pick up a thrift store hutch, then use distressed paint finishes to get this look as well. Be sure to seal it with an exterior grade sealer.
  This cinder block planter bar on ‘Design Sponge’ is uber cool, and pretty easy.  The basic steps are all there, be sure to read through the comments for additional tips.
  Here is an idea that couldn’t be simpler. What more festive way to share drinks than an ice filled wheelbarrow?  And, it’s portable! You know, for when the party moves from the patio to the lawn for the inevitable football “game”. From ‘Style Me Pretty‘.
  The Creativity Exchange’ has a great project for those who like to “remake” things… their potting bench turned outdoor bar is more than just repurposing. They has a full tutorial on how to add hardware, make glass storage, etc… Great project for those who don’t want to do actual construction.
  Lastly, another Pinterest inspirational project. This one is pretty easy…attach two pallets together with screws, paint, then top with landscape pavers. Pick up some landscape adhesive at Home Depot and attach the pavers permanently for safety. Done!

During the winter, you may think there is not much to be done outside. But I love the outdoors the whole year, and I think there is always a way to find happiness in the garden! So take advantage of those frigid outdoor temps, don some good gloves and a scarf, and head out to the garden to create these 7 crafty outdoor projects with ice! Our feature project, above, is from Kate at ‘Faceless 39’. She shows us how to make decorative ice gems for your garden with step by step photos… This is an easy project that’s lots of fun!
  Learn to make ice lanterns, from ‘Willowday’! I love how the candle glows against the melting ice… these would be amazing along a walkway for a holiday party!
  I have never seen a craft quite like these winter ice sun catchers from Tracy on ‘Hubpages’. Easy to follow tutorial, these are so cool! What if you just used all blues, to create a look of glowing ice?
  hese DIY ice luminaries from Gabrielle at ‘Design Mom’ are the perfect way to light up a porch or add splash to a garden to be viewed from indoors, perhaps during a holiday get together? If it’s not quite cold enough to freeze them hard outdoors, and you are just using them for an event, you can freeze them on a cookie sheet in your freezer, then place outside just before use.
  From ‘Queen Vanna Creations’, these ice balloons use food coloring to get that bright color. Fun!
  Want to make an ice project that looks like you suddenly have the ability to craft your own giant snowflakes? Make lace and ice, with the help of ‘Resurrection Fern’. Easy and so pretty!
  Lastly, if you want to make those great ice globes, and  you want to do it the easy way… check out these ice globe luminary kits by ‘Gardeners Supply‘. For the amount of fun you get from them, they aren’t real expensive.

Nothing brings holiday warmth to your guests quite like being greeted at the door with some holiday cheer. Words speak louder than any wreath or sparkling lights. (Though we suggest you throw those up too!) Trouble is, when our budgets at that time of year, are already tight, a sign can be quite expensive, especially a larger one meant for the porch or yard. Instead of spending money on decor, make these DIY holiday signs for the front porch, yard or garden and welcome the season into your entire neighborhood by sharing the message of holiday happiness! Our feature photo below is from Jamie at ‘Anderson + Grant’. These DIY distressed Christmas signs will put the holiday spirit into anyone who comes by. Easy tutorial with inexpensive supplies. Love this!
From Donna at ‘Funky Junk’ comes this tutorial for her Sleigh Rides DIY sign. Now she added some vintage hardware to make it into a Christmas card holder, but I love it just as a sign! Don’t overlook her more detailed tutorial on how to stencil so that you know the technique.
  From ‘Whipperberry’, these fun DIY holiday signs were made using a chalk paint powder, and a stencil cutting machine. You can just purchase your own stencil for one sign, or stencil letters. (Unless you want to make ALL those signs, and then that Silhouette machine would totally be worth it!)
  Ok. So this is some serious Christmas spirit in action! Christine at ‘DIY Dreamer’ has a complete tutorial for her outdoor Christmas countdown marquee sign. And when I say complete, I mean she even shares the font she used to create her letters for the sign! This project is much easier than it looks, and well worth the effort. Who else would have this on their front porch, but you?
  Like that lighted sign look? Good! (It kinda nails the spirit of the season, doesn’t it?) Well then try this Ho Ho Ho Christmas marquee sign from Heidi at ‘Honeybear Lane’. I love her tutorial because she includes all the details on how she made this sign, including the exact type of painters tape she used to get those perfect stripes. Love the size of this sign too, perfect for making a front porch statement!
  Loving this DIY woodland sign from Marie at ‘Blooming Homestead‘ for ‘Live Laugh Rowe’. This is a really easy sign, and I think the little detail with the twine wrapped around the top really sets this project apart. Amazing what such a little thing can do, right?
  Amy at ‘The Happy Scraps’ has this cute tutorial for us that kids will love… Her DIY Christmas arrow signs would make any of us feel like looking towards the sky on Christmas Eve!
  From Liz at ‘Liz on Call’ comes this DIY reversible holiday front porch sign. This is brilliant! One side for the fall or Thanksgiving, one side for Christmas, and you have the whole season covered with happy greetings!
  Last, from Melissa at ‘320 Sycamore‘ we have this cute idea for anyone who doesn’t relish the idea of working with lumber. Melissa made this sign from an old door she got at Habitat for Humanity. The bright red paint really says Christmas, and the chalkboard paint in the two recessed sections make it easy to customize the sign, or even change it as the season goes on!

Last weekend Steve had the idea that it was time to add globe lights to the back patio. Especially since we were starting to see them on clearance in the garden section of just about everywhere. And, according to Rachel, my teenager least likely to be found in the garden… it was the coolest thing we have done outside yet. The globe lights just keep making me feel like we’re sitting outside an Airstream on vacation in 1955. Or at a cool urban outdoor restaurant. Or in Austin. Convinced? We purchased two strings of globe lights from Target at less than $15, and strung them to our roof edge and back to the support poles for our shade sails. Yea, I think Austin… ;) So be inspired! We actually want to start you off with a DIY tutorial… In the case you don’t have already existing supports, ‘Bright July’ shows you how to make some easy support poles for globe lights. Now that you have this down, the rest is pure inspiring!

  This next idea is from ‘The Haystack Needle‘, and goes to show you can get that sweet European restaurant flavor even if your outdoor space is a small alleyway. Or maybe especially because it’s a small alleyway!
  From ‘Apartment Therapy‘, this lovely cottage in So Cal wraps the globe lights through a rustic overhang, and makes them even more charming than on their own.
  Use just a couple of strands of globe lights over an eating area… takes the dining area  away from anything related to boring, especially for an evening cocktail or cup of tea.
  From ‘Brick and Mortar‘, this is another example of how you can use globe lights in a small space, and make big impact.
  From a backyard makeover from ‘Hometalk‘, this backyard space would not be the same without these lights. Don’t believe me? Cover the top of the photo, then uncover… see?
  From Beth at ‘Local Milk‘, who, btw, has won numerous awards for her food and photography blog (Visit! Amazing!)… these are again a great example of how simplicity works with these lights… you don’t need some big display like Christmas on steroids… And you don’t have to just use them up above! Line a porch railing or deck with them… use creativity!

  Finally, from Pinterest, this is one last bit of inspiration. So go find globe string lights!

Some of us really look forward to our outdoor Christmas lighting each year… to some of us it’s just an obligatory pain… That’s kind of sad, becasue it gives us a reason to celebrate the outdoors at a time of year when we don’t get out into the garden much. I think those who dread it only feel that way becasue they haven’t been inspired! So here are some great ideas for DIY Christmas outdoor lighting to really make you want to celebrate the season! When I saw these Christmas light balls for the first time, all I could think was “wow”. Simple, using ordinary chicken wire and lights, and such an impact! Find out how to create these Christmas light balls from Christmas Lights Etc…
  Rose Knows Coupons has  a tutorial on creating these outdoor lighted holiday gift boxes. Much less expensive than the ones in the store!
  Wanna know how to make these shooting star lights? Go see the tutorial here!
  Write a message in lights to share with all who pass by. Here they used LED rope lighting. The rope lighting is secured to a grid of wire wreath forms with heavy-duty cable ties.
  This is one of the most creative DIY lighting projects I’ve seen… net lights draped over an outdoor table, and lighted globes hung as a “chandelier”… Like party time for the Christmas creatures!
  Love this message lighting sign by Little Bit Funky. Find out how they made this giant lighted star for less than $5. I would either use dark paint, or lights with white wires to make it a little neater looking during the day, but whatever you like!
  This is a great idea for the patio…fill your hanging baskets with led lights, then push some through to the outside… Fill the basket with some garden goodies!
  Lighted lanterns…just insert led lights into anything clear!
  This last one is just plain old good inspiration…old fashioned bulb multi lights wrapped around an older bicycle… Charming!

Come Fourth of July, most of us spend that day outdoors. It’s a great time to show your patriotic pride by making some outdoor 4th of July decor for your yard and garden. We’ve found some cool projects for you that are fun, easy and great for the kids to help on as well. So fly your flag and get out the red, white and blue! It’s Fourth of July! Our featured project, above – ‘A Diamond in the Stuff’ has a project that just might be the best use for a wood pallet I’ve seen yet. Try her wood flag wreath… This could be a great porch decoration all year round! From ‘Sunshine Girl Crafts’, this outdoor “fireworks” display is made from simple 4×4 wood scraps, some paint and a little dollar store froo froo!
  ‘For the Love Of’ has a simple tutorial to create these DIY patriotic luminaries with tissue paper…great craft with the kids!
  ‘Pink and Green Mama’ made these DIY 4th of July lawn stars with her kids…flour and water, and a homemade stencil… this is festive and fun!
  This easy to make patriotic bunting from ‘Create and Babble’ will have your front porch just oozing the red, white and blue!
  Set up this cool fun and games station by ‘Uncommon Designs’, and make sure all the kids make those wonderful summer memories at your 4th celebration.
  Ehow has this cute cupcake liner wreath tutorial… you might even find all these supplies at your dollar store. Fun!
  Love, love, love this DIY mason jar centerpiece by ‘Country Chic Cottage’… Lighted and amazing, you could use this year after year!

I love fall decorating, and I really enjoy Halloween, but frankly, indoors, my fall decor wins out. But that doesn’t mean I want to 86 the idea of having some Halloween fun! My solution is to come up with some front porch Halloween decorating, so that I can enjoy the “holiday”, but not compromise the indoors. In other words, no spiders allowed inside my house! So this year, Steve and I have gone out and found some great front porch Halloween decorating ideas, and are sharing our favs here with you. Some are tutorials, some are just great ideas, all of them are fun! From ‘BHG‘, these rooftop skeletons are held in place with invisible fishing line… Obviously, how you pose your skeletons is key! This makes me smile and creeps me out all at the same time.
  ‘Weekly Scrapper’ made this tutorial on their countdown to Halloween project from cedar boards, but I imagine it would look amazing with reclaimed or scrap wood as well! A stencil, some paint and a dollar store chalkboard completes the countdown.
  Make this Halloween house (on your house!) with this easy, and inexpensive project by ‘Nifty Thrifty Living’. How fun is this?!!
  Make these owl night watchers for either side of your front door, from ‘Martha’… They made these out of poster board (it would have to be a protected porch!) but I’m thinking black craft foam would stand a little light weather… Just print out the template and then trace onto the craft foam… You will have to go to your craft store to get large sheets of craft foam, or I found rolls of it online at Consumer Crafts.
  This one is just an inspirational idea, done with discount store spider webs and spiders… Great idea for how to lay out a real spooky front porch! Lighting is key!
  More inspiration from ‘Craft Critters‘… I love the black and white!
  From ‘Good Housekeeping‘, anchor large branches into holes drilled into pumpkins, and add black ravens. Simple!
  From ‘Chapman Place’ you can learn how to make these glitter trick or treat pillows out of a drop cloth, or you can purchase them at her Etsy store. So cute for a front porch swing!
  From ‘Boston Interiors’, another sign for Halloween, get out the stencils!
  Speaking of witches, ding, dong, the witch is dead! Here is a easy Halloween front porch project that is really cute! From ‘Holiday Snobs’, check out their tutorial.

  Finally, this glitter pumpkin topiary by ‘Diamond in the Stuff’ is the perfect Halloween porch decoration for someone looking for a little glitz… Elegant Halloween decorating, I love it!
