This lovely sunflower forms largeattractive clumps up to a metre in height. The easiest way to distinguish Arrowleaf Balsamroot from other sunflowers is by the silvery-green arrow-head-shaped leaves.
Distribution The range of the plant extends from British Columbia and south to Colorado and central California. It is one of many sunflowers found in the Rocky Mountains.
Habitat and Blooming Times Arrowleaf Balsamroot grows on well-drained soil in open woodland sites exposed to plenty of sunshine. It blooms from late May to July and grows Uses American Indians used the seeds to make a kind of flour called pinole.
Etymology Balsamorhiza, the genus name, means 'balsam root'. The specific epithet sagittata means 'arrow shaped' - a reference to the leaves of this plant, which are shaped like arrowheads.

Aristolochia paucinervis can be found in damp ditches in the western Mediterranean and is not as widespread and common as Aristolochia baetica. It flowers from February through to the end of July.
The plants of the Aristolochiaceae family attract their pollinators (flies) by exuding a strong smell from their flowers which are typically saxaphone-shaped. When the flies crawl down into the flowers, they are trapped by the hairs that surround the 'mouth' and remain, crawling around, inside the flower overnight. By the following morning the hairs have withered and the flies, now covered with pollen, are able to escape and move on to other flowers and so complete the pollination cycle.

This relative of Deadly Nightshade is a poisonous plant. According to The Plant List the old name Solanum sodomaeum (attributed to Carl Linnaeus) is considered unresolved, and so the scientific name Solanum linnaeum is accepted as the preferred name of this species.
Identification This perennial plant has attractive flowers each with five purple petals and small yellow stigmas, but it also has vicious thorns. The previous year's fruits can sometimes be seen ripening while the new season's flowers are attracting insect pollinators. The fruits are typically 3cm to 5cm across and look very much like unripe tomatoes; they appear in late summer; turning gradually from green to bright yellow and eventually black. The fruits are deadly poisonous and should never be eaten.
Distribution Apple of Sodom, a native of southern Africa, is found occasionally in many Mediterranean countries and is considered a seriously invasive alien in parts of Australia and Newzealand.

This interesting plant is becoming more scarce and is now only found very locally in a few confined spots in north/northwest England and in parts of Wales.
Angular Solomon's-seal is a chalk loving plant which grows in rocky limestone habitats, often in limestone pavements.
It grows to around 50cm in height and has whitish-green flowers which unlike it's close relative, Common Solomon's-seal (Polygonatum multiflorum) are not 'waisted' and are tubular in appearance. It gets it's name 'angular' from the stems which are more erect than those of Common Solomon's-seal and then arch at a quite acute angle towards the top. The leaves are more erect than with Common Solomon's-seal. The flowers are followed by black berries.
It flowers from May to July.

The flowers of Anemone heldreichii are white and sometimes flushed with pale pink. The reverse of the petals may be either bluish or pink.
Distribution This Mediterranean member of the Buttercup family (ranunculaceae) grows in Karpathos, Crete and on the Ionian islands. Although these lovely wildflowers look very attractive, like most if not all Anemone species they are poisonous.
Habitat and Blooming Times This lovely wildflower favours shaded sites in the dry Mediterranean region to which it is native and where it blooms from January through to the end of April.
Etymology Anemone comes from Greek and literally means 'daughter of the wind', although many other explanations have been put forward as the intended meaning of the name Anemone. The specific eopithet heldreichii was selected in honour of the 19th century German botanist Theodor von Heldreich.

There are many visual similarities between populations of Orchis anatolica, Orchis quadripunctata and Orchis sitiaca, but it is the smaller flowers and flat lip that are the main distinguishing features which separate O. anatolica from the other two.
Description Orchis anatolica grows up to 40cm tall and has 2-6 dark green basal leaves which are sometimes marked with purple. There are smaller bract-like leave higher up the stem which is washed red. The lax inforescence carries between 2-15 flowers which are pink-to-purple, occasionally white. The 3 lobed lip is convex and is marked with dark purple spots.
Distribution The Anatolian Orchid occurs in various parts of the eastern Mediterranean including Crete, Rhodes, Karpathos, Kasos, Cyprus and mainland Greece. There is some confusion surrounding the identification of the plants found in Crete which may be the result of hybridisation between O. anatolica and O. quadripunctata.
Habitat The plant grows in open woodland and scrub on calcareous substrates which are dry-to-moist. Flowering times It blooms from the end of February through to the beginning of April.

Amphibious Bistort, a perennial member of the Knotweed family, has two forms; one grows in water with leaves that float on the surface, while the other grows on land that can be quite some distance from water. In the shallow margins of ponds and lakes, Amphibious Bistort creates a wonderful flush of colour which often encroaches onto the shore, where its leaves become elongated rather than heart-shaped as they are in water.
Identification Creeping stems of Amphibious Bistort produce flowers in dense spikes that stand upright; when in water they usually reach a height of 15 to 25cm, but on land this plant can grow to 40cm and occasionally more. Each little flower corolla is typically just 3 to 4mm long and has five pink petal-like segments and five protruding stamens. Distribution Persicaria amphibia is fairly common and widespread across most of Britain and Ireland but absent from some parts of northern Scotland. This species is native to most of mainland Europe and occurs also in parts of Asia and in North America. This plant is also recorded in South Africa, where it is considered to be a native wildflower. Elsewhere Amphibious Bistort is probably an introduced species and in some parts of the world it is an invasive alien weed.
Habitat Amphibious Bistort thrives in ponds, lakes and slow-flowing fresh water, but remarkably this plant can also grow on bare dryish ground that is not inundated for long periods. Shown on this page is the aquatic form of Persicaria amphibia. The terrestrial form produces much more sparse floral displays, even on stems growing from the same rootstock as some nearby aquatic stems. Blooming Times In Britain and Ireland Persicaria amphibia produces a continuous display of flowers from early July through to the end of September. Uses Apart from being a colourful aquatic plant for bog gardens and ponds, Amphibous Bistort is not generally considered to have much value as either a source of food or of herbal medicines. There are reports from Asia of this plant being grown as fodder for farmed animals and that it also had some medicinal properties; however, it is known to contain toxins that can aggravate various human ailments including gout, and so great caution is necessary when considering whether to use the leaves either for food or for medicine.
Etymology Persicaria, the generic name, relates the shape of leaves of this group of plants to those of a peach tree. Just as it sounds, the specific epithet amphibia refers to the fact that this plant can live either in water or on dry land, as animal amphibians can, of course. Similar Species Redshank Persicaria maculosa is a weed of muddy farm gateways and other areas of damp bare ground. Dark arrowhead-shaped patches on the leaves help identify this unimpressive plant. Water-pepper Persicaria hydropiper has a peppery taste; its drooping or nodding spikes of flowers are whitish.

This member of the Rose family (Rosaceae) has been cultivated throughout the Mediterranean region, but it is actually a native of North Africa and western Asia. The pretty bright pink buds of the flowers, which fade to white after they open, appear before the leaves and can often be seen from January onwards in the southern Iberian Peninsula.
In the Algarve in Portugal, where this specimen was photographed, the once thriving industry of growing almonds for marzipan has collapsed in favour of using cheaper imported nuts from abroad, although the Portuguese continue to make the almond-paste fruits, sweets and desserts for which they are world famous. This means that many of the almond orchards are now abandoned; the fruits of these neglected trees often contain poisonous prussic acid (hydrogen cyanide) and should therefore be avoided.

Allium subvillosum is an attractive plant, but to appreciate its true beauty you need to get close up and personal because it has such tiny flowers.
Identification A relative of Wild Garlic (also known as Ramsons), Allium subvillosum has dense umbels each with 15 to 20 white flowers that are deeply cupped and have yellow anthers. This bulb-forming perennial grows up to 30cm tall, and its long narrow leaves are covered with long white hairs. Allium subvillosum was until recently classified as a member of the Lily family (Liliaceae), but recent taxonomic revisions now place it in the family Asparagaceae.
Distribution These spring wildflowers are found in southern Spain and Portugal, Sicily, North Africa and the Balearics. Habitat This coastal plant of the Mediterranean region can be found in both sandy and grassy places close to the sea.
Blooming Times Allium subvillosum blooms very early in the year. The specimens shown on this page were photographed in the Algarve region of Portugal in late February. Etymology Allium is the Latin word for garlic, while the specific epithet subvillosum comes from sub- meaning somewhat or slightly, and -villosum meaning covered in soft hairs.

It is becoming increasingly rare due to habitat destruction, and is now listed in the Red Data List of endangered plant species. It is one of the toadflaxes which are now included of the Plantain (Plantaginaceae) family - a hugely diverse grouping of plants which now incorporates many of the species originally included in the Scrophulariacea family.
Cape St. Vincent is famous for its biodiversity and boasts a number of endangered and/or endemic species of plants. Despite its designation as a 'natural park' the site is under great pressure from tourist footfall and also, shockingly, from building projects - in recent years villas have been built in the midst of the most fragile of the habitats. The site is also threatened by the dumping of litter and rubble, particularly by builders.
Linaria algarviana is easily confused with Linaria amethystea, which is common throughout the Algarve and found in open coastal fields and meadows.
Linaria algarviana appears to flower later than L. amethystea, but this may be due to the cold, windy and generally inhospitable conditions which often affect Cape St. Vincent well into springtime.
