There are many varieties of Artemisia, also known as mugwort and wormwood plant. One of the most common varieties grown for its sweet-smelling, silvery foliage is sweet wormwood (A. annua) or sweet Annie plant. Growing sweet Annie and other wormwood plants is easy. They make interesting additions to nearly any garden as they’re quite adaptable and hardy plants. In fact, some varieties are even considered invasive if not kept properly maintained. Let’s look at how to grow wormwood plant in your garden.
How to Grow Wormwood Plant Grow wormwood or sweet Annie plant in a sunny location and well-drained soil. This plant doesn’t like being overly wet. Wormwood is generally planted in spring. If starting plants from seeds, sow the small seeds in flats and set the seedlings out in the garden well after the last frost in spring. Once established, wormwood plants require little care. In addition to occasional watering, these plants can be fertilized once a year. Light pruning can be performed to help keep these plants from becoming unruly, especially the spreading varieties. Wormwood plants are not typically affected by many disease problems, other than root rot from overly wet soil. Their scented foliage also deters many garden pests.
Growing Sweet Annie Plant Sweet Annie is typically grown in the garden for its feathery, sweet-smelling foliage and yellow blooms, which are often used in floral decorations and wreaths. Although this variety is considered an annual, sweet Annie generally reseeds itself readily in the garden and in some cases, can become a nuisance. The feathery, fern-like foliage appears in spring and blooms in late summer. As sweet Annie takes up space in the garden, growing to about 2 feet tall, allow plenty of room for it in the garden.
Harvest sweet Annie plant just as its blooms begin to appear in late summer for use in floral arrangements or wreaths. When drying sweet Annie, place branches in small bundles and hang upside down in a dark, well-ventilated area for about two to three weeks or until dry. When collecting seeds, cut the foliage to the ground (leave some plants remaining for self-seeding) and place in a paper bag. Allow to dry and then gently shake the seeds loose. Growing sweet Annie plants, like all other wormwood varieties, is easy. These plants make great additions to many gardens and can even be grown in containers. Their attractive, sweet-smelling foliage provides year-round interest and also deters many common garden pests. Best of all, sweet Annie plants require little maintenance once established.

Watercress is a sun-loving perennial that grows along running waterways, such as streams. It has a peppery taste that is delicious in salad mixes and is especially popular in Europe. Watercress is high in iron, calcium and folic acid and is also rich in vitamins A and C. If you love the flavor of this green, you may be wondering if you can grow container watercress herbs and, if so, how do you grow watercress in pots?
How Do You Grow Watercress in Pots? If you have a water feature in the garden, it is a great place for growing watercress in containers, as you are able to mimic the native watery conditions in which cress thrives. You may also grow container watercress herbs in a bucket with 2 to 3 inches of water, allowing the soil to stay saturated. The key is to keep the roots submerged under water. The water should be changed once or twice a week. While watercress will do well in a variety of soil conditions, its ideal range is between a pH of 6.5-7.5. Potted watercress plants should use a soilless mix containing perlite or vermiculite combined with peat. Use a saucer beneath the plant and keep it filled with water to provide constant moisture. Watercress can be propagated via stem cuttings or sown from seeds. Sow the seed just below the surface, about ¼ inch, three weeks before the last frost-free date in your region. It is important to keep the soil of potted watercress plants moist or the plant will not germinate. Seeds can be germinated inside or out in cool, 50 to 60 F. (10 to 16 C.), and wet conditions. Space the plants 8 inches apart when transplanting and place in a sunny outdoor area.
Some recommended varieties of watercress are: Garden cress, Curly cress and Peppergrass (annuals) Winter cress (biennial) Big Leaf cress (perennial) Care of Potted Watercress Care of potted watercress is fairly simple, provided the plant is kept wet. Watercress doesn’t have high nutrient needs, although it may become deficient in phosphorus, potassium or iron. Phosphate deficiencies appear as stunted and dark colored foliage while potassium deficiencies create scorching on older leaves. Yellowing, often in winter, may indicate an iron deficiency. To combat these, mix a water soluble fertilizer in with the water according to the recommended rates.
A few pests such as whitefly, spider mites, and snails may assault your potted watercress plants. Insecticidal soap can control whitefly and natural predators such as lady beetles, predatory mites and thrips can control spider mites. Snails can be trapped or picked off by hand. The tiny, dime-sized leaves of the watercress can be harvested throughout the year. The flavor is best during the cooler months of the year and lessens in flavor once the plant has flowered or temps rise above 85 F (30 C.). Harvest watercress by cutting the plant back to 4 inches and then allow it to re-grow. The leaves can be refrigerated for about a week but are best used fresh for culinary or medicinal purposes.

If you are a salad lover, as I am, it is more than likely that you are familiar with watercress. Because watercress thrives in clear, slow moving water, many gardeners refrain from planting it. The fact is that the plant is very adaptable and watercress cultivation can be attained in a number of different ways at home. So, how to grow watercress in the home garden? Read on to learn more.
Watercress Cultivation Watercress is a perennial cultivated for its clean, slightly peppery tasting leaves and stems. Seen wild, it grows partially submerged in running water and flooded areas in moderately cool climates. If you have a water feature in your landscape, this is a great place to cultivate watercress, but don’t despair if not. Watercress can also be grown in consistently wet soil with a soil pH of 6.5-7.5 in full sun, or you can mimic natural conditions by growing watercress plants in a bucket or other container. In the garden proper, you can dig out a 6-inch furrow, line it with 4-6 mil polyethylene and then fill with 2 inches of composted soil or peat moss. Of course, if you have a running stream on your property, watercress cultivation is about as simple as it gets.
Growing Watercress Plants Watercress can be grown from seed, transplants or cuttings. Watercress varieties abound, but the most common home grown variety is Nasturtium officinale. Prior to planting, choose a sunny location and amend the garden soil with 4-6 inches of composted organic matter down to a depth of 6-8 inches. Seeds are tiny, so they need to be lightly broadcast over the prepared site. Sow three weeks before the frost free date for your area. This plant germinates best in cool conditions (50-60 degrees F. or 10-15 C.) but not frigid. Keep the planting area moist but not covered with water. Container grown plants can be placed in a saucer filled with water to retain moisture. Seedlings will appear in about five days. If you are transplanting, space the plants 8 inches apart once all chance of frost has passed.
Care of Watercress Consistent moisture is the number one concern in the care of watercress; after all, water is its milieu. Container grown plants can be placed in a bucket filled with 2-3 inches of water so the roots stay submerged. Although the plant does not have high nutrient requirements, cultivated cress may show signs of potassium, iron or phosphorus deficiencies. A complete soluble fertilizer applied at the recommended rate should mitigate any of these issues. In the garden, keep the area around the plants free from weeds and mulch to aid in water retention. Snails love watercress and should be removed by hand or trapped. Whiteflies also like the plant and can be controlled with soapy water or insecticidal soap. Spider mites cause leaf discoloration and general deterioration of the plant. Natural predators such as lady beetles, predatory mites or thrips can help control these pests.
Watercress Harvesting The flavor of watercress is best during the cool months of the year. Once the plant blossoms, the flavor is compromised. Watercress harvesting can commence about three weeks after emergence. Cutting or pruning the plants will encourage them to be thicker and lush. Cut the plants to a height of about 4 inches. Wash the cuttings thoroughly and store in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for as long as week. Harvesting can continue year round, adding a boost of vitamins A and C, along with niacin, ascorbic acid, thiamine, riboflavin and iron to your ho-hum salad or an added zing to compound butters or sauces.

For spring and summer color and ease of care, add red valerian plants (also known as Jupiter’s beard) to the full sun herb garden or flower bed. Botanically called Ceranthus, Jupiter’s beard adds tall and bushy color in the landscape and is ideal as an easy-care background border plant.
Ceranthus Jupiter’s Beard Plant The Jupiter’s beard plant reaches 3 feet in height, often the same in width, and displays profuse panicles of fragrant red flowers. Colors of white and pink are found in some cultivars of the wild red valerian plants. Native to the Mediterranean, the Jupiter’s beard has successfully transitioned to many areas of the United States and attracts butterflies and the all-important pollinators to the area in which it is planted. Leaves and roots of growing Jupiter’s beard are edible and may be enjoyed in salads. As with all edible plants, avoid eating chemically treated specimens.
Growing Jupiter’s Beard Jupiter’s beard plant can be propagated from cuttings in summer and often re-seeds the same year. Seeds of Ceranthus Jupiter’s beard planted in early spring will flower the same year, in spring to early summer. This plant flourishes in many types of soil, including poor soil, as long as it is well draining. Red valerian plants also enjoy a sunny location in the garden but will tolerate some partial shade as well.
Care of Red Valerian Plants/Jupiter’s Beard The care of red valerian is minimal, making it an enjoyable specimen in the garden. Part of its care includes thinning seedlings to a manageable level, depending on how many more of the Jupiter’s beard plant you want in the flower bed. Deadhead flowers of growing Jupiter’s beard before seeds form to decrease re-seeding. Care of red valerian includes clipping the plant back by one-third in late summer. After this renewal pruning, it is not necessary to prune the Jupiter’s beard plant again until spring. Other care of red valerian includes watering when the soil is extremely dry, but when rainfall is average, additional water is usually not necessary.

How to Grow Valerian Plants What is valerian? It’s a hardy perennial native to Eurasia. It’s very cold tolerant and thrives in USDA zones 4 through 9. A valerian herb plant will die back to the ground in the winter, but the roots should be fine and will put up new growth in the spring. It will grow in a wide variety of conditions, from full to sun to partial shade and in any well-draining soil. It does, however, like to be kept moist. As part of valerian herb plant care, you’ll need to water it frequently and cover it with mulch to help retain moisture.
Also, a valerian herb plant will self-seed very readily. If you don’t want your plants to spread, remove the flowers before they have a chance to develop and drop seeds. Growing valerian herbs is very easy. The seeds can be sown directly in the ground after all chance of frost has passed, or they can be started indoors several weeks earlier and then transplanted outside.
The plants grow to between 3 and 5 feet in height and produce white, faintly scented flowers. The roots are used for their calming properties when eaten or brewed into tea. Harvest the roots in the fall by watering the plant, then digging the whole thing up. Wash the soil from the roots, then dry them in the oven at 200 degrees F. (93 C.) with the door open a crack. The roots may take two growing seasons to be large enough to harvest.

Thyme plants, like most woody herbs, do best when they are pruned regularly. Taking the time to trim thyme not only creates a nicer looking plant, but also helps improve the amount you can harvest from the plant. Keep reading to learn how to cut thyme so that it grows best for you.
When to Prune Thyme Plants The right time to trim thyme will depend on the kind of pruning you plan on performing on the plant. There are four ways of pruning thyme plants and they are: Hard Rejuvenation – Late fall after first frost Light Rejuvenation – After blooming in the summer Shaping – Spring Harvesting – Anytime during active growth (spring and summer) Let’s look at why and how to prune thyme in these different ways.
How to Prune Thyme Pruning Thyme for Hard Rejuvenation In most cases, thyme plants don’t need hard rejuvenation pruning because they are normally harvested on a regular basis and harvesting prevents the thyme plant from becoming too woody. Sometimes, a neglected thyme plant may need to be pruned back hard to remove woody growth and encourage tender, usable growth. Hard rejuvenation pruning normally take a few years to complete. In late fall, after the first frost, select one-third of the oldest and woodiest stems on your thyme plant. Using sharp, clean shears, cut these stems back by half. Repeat the process the next year until your thyme plant has returned to growing younger, more tender stems all over the plant. Pruning Thyme for Light Rejuvenation When you trim thyme for light rejuvenation, you are basically ensuring that your thyme plant doesn’t become too woody in the future. In late summer, after the thyme plant has flowered, select the one-third oldest stems on the plant. Using sharp, clean shears, cut these back by two-third. This should be done yearly for the best health of the plant.
Pruning Thyme for Shaping All thyme, whether it is upright thyme or creeping thyme, tends to get a little wild looking if not shaped regularly. If you’re okay with your thyme getting a bit wild looking, you don’t need to cut your thyme to shape it. But, if you want a thyme plant that is a little more formal, you’ll want to shape your thyme plant yearly. In the spring, after new growth has started to appear, take a moment to picture how you would like your thyme plant to look. Keeping that shape in mind, use a sharp, clean pair of shears to trim the thyme plant in that shape. Don’t cut the thyme plant back more than one-third when shaping. If you need to cut back your thyme plant by more than one-third in order to achieve the shape that you would like, only do a one-third cut back each year until the desired shape of the thyme plant is achieved. Cutting Thyme for Harvesting Thyme can be cut at any time during the spring and summer to harvest. It is best though to stop harvesting thyme about three to four weeks before the first frost. This will allow the more tender stems on the thyme plant to harden off some before the cold comes and will make it so you have less dieback on the thyme plant over the winter.

Fresh available herbs are a delight for the home cook. What could be better than having the scents and flavors near at hand in the kitchen? Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is a useful herb that can be used in a variety of ways. It adds a delicate aroma and almost grassy spice to any dish. Growing thyme indoors requires plenty of sunshine and well drained soil. Growing thyme inside is one of the easiest indoor herbs to cultivate.
Planting Thyme Indoors Thyme is both a culinary and aromatic herb. An excellent container for growing thyme is a clay planter. Other types of pots will suffice, but a clay pot will allow the thyme herb to dry out between watering and prevent overly wet roots as thyme isn’t tolerant of soggy root conditions. The container should have at least one large drainage hole. A good mix of sand, potting soil, peat moss and perlite will provide adequate nutrients and drainage. Thyme can tolerate indirect light, which makes it perfect for the kitchen herb garden. The best results will be found when thyme is planted where it receives six hours of daylight. Once the thyme has been planted, place the container in a southern- or western-facing window if possible. Growing thyme inside will require temperatures in the daytime around 60 F. (16 C.) or more.
How to Grow Thyme Indoors Herb care for plants indoors is much the same as for those outdoors. Water completely each time but allow the pot to dry before watering again. Fertilize thyme with a weak solution of fish emulsion or liquid seaweed, diluted by half every two weeks. Cut back overly woody stems on the thyme plant to force fresh new growth. Trim off flowers and dry them for a sachet or use them in tea. Removal of flowers increases foliage production. Potted Thyme Care Container grown thyme needs to be repotted every season or two depending on the size of the pot and rate of growth. You’ll know it’s time when the roots are growing out of the bottom of the container. Thyme plants divide easily when repotted to reproduce even more plants. Thyme growing indoors will benefit from relocation to the outdoors in summer. Begin by exposing the potted thyme to a semi-shade location to acclimate it to outdoor light and temperatures. Gradually move it to full sun.
Using and Harvesting Thyme Growing thyme indoors allows you to have a constant ready supply of fresh seasoning. You can start using your thyme as soon as the plant has plenty of foliage. Cut off the stems and rinse them. Pick off the leaves or simply run your thumb and index finger down the length of the stem to push off the leaves. Chop the leaves or add them whole to sauces, soups and other dishes. The stems can be stewed in stock to release their flavor but remember to strain them out. Thyme leaves can also be dried by spreading them on a cookie sheet for a day or so in a warm dry area.

Drying Fresh Thyme in a Dehydrator There are several ways you can dry your herbs. Drying fresh thyme in a food dehydrator is fast and protects against possible mold. The moisture in herbs that are drying in the necessary warm conditions may cause the formation of mold if too much humidity is in the area. To dry thyme in a dehydrator, lay the stems in a single layer on the racks that come with the unit. The stems will dry in under two days and can be stripped of the leaves. How to Dry Thyme by Hanging Traditionally, many herbs were dried by hanging. This is still a useful practice today and requires no special equipment. Take stems and bundle them together. Tie the bundles and hang them where the temperatures are at least 50 F. (10 C.) and humidity is low. Stems may take a week or more to dry.
Other Methods of Drying Fresh Thyme Drying the leaves is the quickest method of preserving the herb. Once the leaves are separated from the stem, you can just lay them on a cookie sheet. Stir them up after half a day. The leaves will be completely dry in just a couple of days. Storing Thyme Storing thyme correctly will preserve its essence and flavor. All have been prized for centuries for their fragrance, flavor and ornamental habitat. With this dizzying array of thyme varieties, there is a possible specimen for nearly every climate and landscape. Keep reading about the types of thyme plants you can grow.
How to Care for Different Types of Thyme Most thyme varieties are hardy in USDA zones 5-9 but tend to dislike hot, humid summers or overly wet conditions. Also, most varieties of thyme prefer full sun and well drained soil. With a little research and even with adverse conditions, however, there are sure to be various types of thyme plants that are suitable for growth in those areas. Avoid fertilizing thyme varieties as they tend to become leggy and weak. Types of thyme plants cultivated for culinary use should be replaced every three years or so to prevent woody stems and promote the desirable tender leaf production. Most varieties of thyme are susceptible to overwatering, and many varieties of thyme tolerate or even thrive amid moderate to severe pruning. All varieties of thyme are easy to propagate via cuttings, division and seed and with their low growing habit (less than 15 inches tall), this semi-evergreen is appropriate for ground cover or for growing in an herb garden, window box or pots. Many thyme varieties have a lovely spreading habit and will also look wonderful peeking between pavers or stones in a patio or walkway or in a rocky wall while being tolerant of foot traffic. Others have a more upright growth pattern and do well as stand-alone specimens in the garden or in pots, either alone or mixed with other plants or herbs.
Uses for Different Types of Thyme Highly aromatic with tiny leaves and tubular-shaped flowers forming in dense groups, all different types of thyme are attractive to bees and the honey made from bees who dine on thyme blooms rivals that of the finest lavender honey. Of course, thyme varieties are sought for cooking and used classically in “boquet garni” in stews, soups, meat, fish, compound butter, eggs, dressings, and vegetable dishes. Thyme pairs exquisitely with lemon, garlic, and basil and can be used either fresh or dried in any of the above or put sprigs in oil or vinegar to infuse the flavor. The essential oil of many varieties of thyme plants are used in colognes, soaps, lotions and even candles. Dried thyme is lovely in sachets. Thyme leaves may be harvested either before or after blooming and is one of the few herbs where using dried or fresh seems to matter little in the flavoring of foods. However, it is slow to release its oils, so add it earlier in the cooking process.
Types of Thyme Plants While there are a plethora of thyme varieties, here is a list of some of the most common: Common thyme (T. vulgaris) – prostrate form, yellow and variegated foliage available, used in cooking. Creeping Thyme Facts Thymus praecox is a low growing perennial hardy in USDA hardiness zones 4-9 with fairly minimal requirements. An evergreen with lightly haired foliage, this tiny-growing creeping thyme varietal — rarely over 3 inches — will appear in low, dense mats, which sprawl randomly and quickly fill in areas as a ground cover. T. serpyllum is another creeping thyme variety. Just like other thyme varieties, creeping thyme is edible with a flavor and aroma akin to mint when crushed or steeped for teas or tinctures. To harvest creeping thyme ground cover, either remove the leaves from the stems or dry by snipping from the plant and hanging upside down in a dark, well aerated area. Harvest creeping thyme in the morning when the essential oils of the plant are at their peak. Another creeping thyme fact is despite its enticing odor, growing creeping thyme ground cover is deer resistant, making it an ideal landscape candidate in areas frequented by them. Creeping thyme is also capable of withstanding tromping upon by rambunctious kids (making it kid resistant as well!), which makes it an exceptional planting choice anywhere that has frequent foot traffic. How to Plant Creeping Thyme As mentioned, growing creeping thyme is a simple process due to its compatibility in a variety of soils and light exposures. Although this ground cover prefers well-drained lightly textured soils, it will grow quite well in less than desirable medium and thrive from sun to light shade environments. Soil should be kept moist but not wet, as the growing creeping thyme plant is susceptible to root drowning and edema. The soil pH for growing creeping thyme plants should be neutral to slightly alkaline. Creeping thyme ground cover can be propagated via stem cuttings or divisions and, of course, can be purchased from the local nursery as either established plantings or seeds. Cuttings from the creeping thyme plant should be taken in the early summer. Start seeds when growing creeping thyme indoors or they may be sown in the spring after the danger of frost has passed.
Plant creeping thyme 8 to 12 inches apart to allow for its spreading habitat. Prune creeping thyme ground cover in the spring to maintain a compact appearance and again after the small white flowers are spent if additional shaping is preferred.
