Native to the Eastern U.S., the tupelo tree is an attractive shade tree that thrives in open areas with plenty of room to spread and grow. Find out about tupelo tree care and maintenance in this article.
Care and Uses for Tupelo Trees There are many uses for tupelo trees in areas large enough to accommodate their size. They make excellent shade trees and can serve as street trees where overhead wires aren’t a concern. Use them to naturalize low, boggy areas and places with periodic flooding. Tupelo trees are an important food source for wildlife. Many species of birds, including wild turkeys and wood ducks, eat the berries and a few species of mammals, such as raccoons and squirrels, also enjoy the fruit. White-tailed deer browse on the tree’s twigs.
Tupelo tree growing conditions include full sun or partial shade and deep, acidic, evenly moist soil. Trees planted in alkaline soil die young. Even though they prefer wet soil, they tolerate brief periods of drought. One thing they won’t tolerate is pollution, whether it is in the soil or the air, so it’s best to keep them out of urban environments.
Types of Tupelo Trees The white tupelo gum tree (Nyssa ogeche ‘Bartram’) is limited by its environment. It has a native range that centers around Northwest Florida in a low area fed by the Chattahoochee River system. Although it grows in other areas as well, you won’t find another region with the concentration of white tupelos equal to this 100-mile long stretch near the Gulf of Mexico. The area is famous for its high-quality tupelo honey.
The most common and familiar tupelo trees are the black gum tupelo trees (Nyssa sylvatica). These trees stand up to 80 feet tall at maturity. They usually have a 1.5- to 3-foot wide, straight trunk, although you may occasionally see a split trunk. The leaves are shiny and bright green in summer, turning several lovely shades of red, orange, yellow and purple in fall. The tree remains interesting in winter because its regular, horizontal branches give it an attractive profile. The birds that visit the tree to clean up the last of the berries also add winter interest.

Although travelers palm (Ravenala madagascariensis) displays big, fan-like leaves, the name is actually a bit of a misnomer, as travelers palm plants are actually more closely related to banana trees. This exotic plant produces small, creamy white flowers, which often appear year round. Want to learn about growing travelers palm in your garden? Find out below.
Travelers Palm Hardiness Travelers palm is definitely a tropical plant, suitable for growing in the warm climates of USDA plant hardiness zones 10 and 11. Travelers palm plants may survive in zone 9, but only if they are well protected in the event of occasional frost.
How to Grow a Travelers Palm Travelers palm plants tolerate sandy and clay-based soils, but prefer moist, rich soil. Although the plant is relatively disease resistant, a well-drained planting site produces healthiest growth. Provide shade for the base of the plants after planting. Once established, a sunny spot is best, but the travelers palm does fine with a little light shade. Provide shelter from strong winds, which may tear and tatter the huge leaves. This is a good-sized plant that reaches heights of 30 to 50 feet and sometimes even more, so provide plenty of space for travelers palm. Allow a minimum of 8 to 10 feet from a house or other structure, and 12 feet is even better. If you’re planting more than one, space them at least 8 to 10 feet apart to prevent crowding.
Caring for Travelers Palms Water as needed to keep the soil evenly moist, but never soggy or waterlogged. Feed travelers palm plants once in spring, summer and autumn, using a fertilizer formulated for tropical plants or palms. A good, all-purpose fertilizer is also acceptable. Prune outer leaf branches as needed, and deadhead wilted blooms if you don’t want the plant to self-seed.

If you’ve never heard of the exotic Tipuana tipu, you aren’t alone. It isn’t grown extensively in most parts of the country. What is a tipu tree? It’s a medium-sized flowering legume tree native to Bolivia. If you are thinking of growing a tipu tree, read on. You’ll find lots of Tipuana tipu information as well as tips on how to grow a Tipuana tree.
What is a Tipu Tree? A tipu tree (Tipuana tipu) is a shade tree planted frequently in the warmer parts of the world. In the United States it is used as a flowering accent tree or a landscape tree. The tree has a single trunk and a high spreading canopy. It can grow to over 60 feet (18 m.) in height and about the same in width. However, in cultivation the trees usually don’t get that big. Beautiful yellow flowers cover the tipu’s canopy during the summer months. These turn into the tipu fruit, large brown seed pods. Both flowers and pods create litter below, so this is something you should consider prior to planting.
Additional Tipuana Tipu Information If you are thinking of growing a tipu tree in your garden, you’ll need to know a little more about the species. The first rule for how to grow a tipuana tree involves climate. The tipu is a tropical tree. It only thrives in very warm climates such as in U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 9 through 11. However, even zone 9 may be too cold and you’ll have to consider protection. If you are able to grow tipu trees, you’ll find them to be some of the most beautiful flowering trees for warm climates. The blossoms are yellow or apricot and pea-shaped. Tipu trees grow quite quickly. With proper tipu tree care, they can live to 150 years.
Tipu Tree Care To start growing a tipu tree, plant the tree in a site with full sun or partial sun. Be a little careful about selecting a site. The tipu has a large trunk that buttresses out at the base. In time, the roots may be able to lift sidewalks. If you want to know how to grow a tipu tree, you’ll be happy to learn that the trees are not picky about soil. They will grow in moist or dry soil, in clay, loam or sand. They prefer acidic soil but also tolerate slightly alkaline soil.
Although tipu trees are reputedly drought resistant, tipu tree care means providing regular irrigation. This is particularly important during dry spells.

Native to eastern Australia, Australian tea tree plant (Leptospermum laevigatum) is a graceful evergreen shrub or small tree valued for ability to grow in difficult conditions, and for its twists and curves, which give the tree a natural, sculptured appearance. Australian tea tree plant is also known as Australian myrtle, or coastal tea tree. Want to learn about growing an Australian tea tree? It’s easy; just keep reading to find out!
Australian Tea Tree Information Australian tea tree plants are suitable for growing in USDA plant hardiness zones 9 through 11. Although mature height depends on the species, Australian tea tree plants in the garden generally reach heights of 10 to 25 feet. Australian tea tree displays small, leathery, bluish-grey leaves and grey bark that adds to its textural appearance. Lovely apple blossom-like flowers bloom in early spring. Australian tea tree plants are drought tolerant once established, withstanding wind and poor, sandy soil. Australian tea tree is a great choice for a seaside environment.
How to Grow Australian Tea Trees Australian tea tree plants thrive in either full or partial sunlight. Although the tree adapts to most soil types, it prefers fast-draining sandy or loamy, somewhat acidic soil. Hard-packed or heavy clay soil are best avoided. Smaller varieties, which work well for hedges, can be planted as close as 3 to 6 feet; however, large varieties need 15 to 20 feet of spreading-out space but responds well to trimming. Australian tea tree care is easy enough. When growing an Australian tea tree, it benefits from a deep watering every week during the first summer – as a general rule, saturate the soil to a depth of 6 to 15 inches. Once the tree is established, it requires no supplemental water, although it benefits from an occasional irrigation during extended periods of hot, dry weather.
Don’t worry about feeding your Australian tea tree, as too much fertilizer can damage the tree. If growth seems slow or you think the tree needs fertilizer, apply a light application of a water-soluble fertilizer every month during the growing season, using a solution of no more than ½ teaspoon of fertilizer per gallon of water. Never feed the tree after late summer. Note: Some Australian tea tree varieties can become invasive in certain areas. If you live in California, for example, check with your local cooperative extension office before planting. If you want to limit spreading growth in your garden, rake up seed pods that fall on the ground. If the tree is small, remove flowers before they go to seed.

The Esperance silver tea tree (Leptospermum sericeum) wins a gardener’s heart with its silvery leaves and delicate pink flowers. The little shrubs, native to Esperance, Australia, are sometimes called Australian tea trees or Esperance tea trees. They are easy to grow and require little maintenance when planted in appropriate locations. Read on for more Esperance tea tree information.
Australian Tree Trees It’s easy to fall for the highly ornamental, silver tea tree, a member of the large Myrtaceae family. If you read Esperance tea tree information, you’ll find that the trees produce generous amounts of silky pink flowers annually. The blossoms generally open in spring, but they can flower at any point between May and October depending on when your area gets rainfall. The silvery foliage is beautiful with and without the flowers. Each flower can grow to 2 inches across. Although the plant is only native to granite outcrops in Australia’s Cape Le Grand National Park and a few offshore islands, it is cultivated by gardeners around the world. Hybrids and cultivars of Leptospermum species are available commercially, including some with red flowers. L. scoparium is one of the more popular varieties grown. The Australian tea trees can grow to 10 feet tall, but in exposed areas often stay much smaller. The bushy shrubs are the perfect size for hedges and grow in an upright habit. They are dense plants and spread out into full shrubs.
Esperance Tea Tree Care If you decide to grow silver tea trees, you’ll find that Esperance tea tree care is not difficult. The plants grow happily in sun or partial shade in almost any soil as long as it is well drained. In Esperance, Australia, the plants often grow in shallow surface soil that covers granite rocks, so their roots are accustomed to penetrating deeply into cracks in rocks or in the ground.
Australian tea trees thrive by the coast since they do not mind the salt in the air. The leaves are covered with fine white hairs that give them a silver sheen and also protect them against the effects of salt water. These Esperance plants are also frost hardy to -7 degrees Fahrenheit (-21 C.) in regions that get regular amounts of rainfall.

What is Tamarix? Also known as tamarisk, Tamarix is a small shrub or tree marked by slender branches; tiny, grayish-green leaves and pale pink or off-white blooms. Tamarix reaches heights of up to 20 feet, although some species are much smaller. Read on for more Tamarix information.
Tamarix Information and Uses Tamarix (Tamarix spp.) is a graceful, fast-growing tree that tolerates desert heat, freezing winters, drought and both alkaline and saline soil, although it prefers sandy loam. Most species are deciduous. Tamarix in the landscape works well as a hedge or windbreak, although the tree can appear somewhat scruffy during the winter months. Because of its long taproot and dense growth habit, uses for Tamarix include erosion control, particularly on dry, sloped areas. It also does well in saline conditions.
Is Tamarix Invasive? Before planting Tamarix, keep in mind that the plant has high potential for invasiveness in USDA growing zones 8 through 10. Tamarix is a non-native plant that has escaped its boundaries and, as a result, has created serious problems in mild climates, especially in riparian areas where the dense thickets crowd out native plants and the long taproots draw large amounts of water from the soil. The plant also absorbs salt from the groundwater, accumulates it in the leaves, and eventually deposits the salt back to the soil, often in concentrations high enough to be harmful to native vegetation.
Tamarix is extremely difficult to control, as it spreads by roots, stem fragments and seeds, which are dispersed by water and wind. Tamarix is listed as a noxious weed in nearly all western states and is extremely problematic in the Southwest, where it has severely reduced underground water levels and threatened many native species. However, Athel tamarix (Tamarix aphylla), also known as saltcedar or athel tree, is an evergreen species often used as an ornamental. It tends to be less invasive than other species.

Sycamore trees (Platanus occidentalis) make handsome shade trees for large landscapes. The most striking feature of the tree is the bark that has a camouflage pattern comprised of gray-brown outer bark that peels off in patches to reveal the light gray or white wood beneath. Older trees often have solid, light gray trunks. Sycamores also go by the names buttonwood or buttonball trees. This comes from the 1-inch balls that hang from the tree all winter and fall to the ground in spring. Each ball hangs on its own stringy 3- to 6-inch twig.
Facts about the Sycamore Tree The largest deciduous tree in the Eastern United States, sycamore trees can grow 75 to 100 feet tall with a similar spread, and even taller under ideal conditions. The trunk may be as much as 10 feet in diameter. Sycamores have strong wood with several uses, but as the tree ages, a fungus attacks and consumes the heartwood. The fungus doesn’t kill the tree, but it makes it weak and hollow. Wildlife benefit from hollow sycamore trees, using them as storage chambers for nuts, nesting sites and shelter. The enormous size of a sycamore tree makes it impractical for the average home landscape, but they make great shade trees in parks, along stream banks and in other open areas. They were once used as street trees, but they create a lot of litter and the invasive roots damage sidewalks. You may still see them along streets in older suburban neighborhoods, however. Read on to find out how to grow a sycamore tree.
Growing Sycamore Trees Sycamore trees grow in almost any soil, but they prefer deep, rich soil that is moist but well-drained. Plant container-grown trees any time of year. Trees with balled and burlapped roots should be planted in spring or fall. Sycamore tree care is easy. Fertilize the tree every other year if it isn’t growing as fast as it should or the leaves are pale. Water young trees deeply to keep the soil from drying out. After the first couple of years, the tree withstands moderate drought. It’s best to give the soil a deep soaking when you’ve gone a month or so without a drenching rain.
Problems with Sycamore Trees Many problems are associated with sycamore trees. It’s fairly messy, shedding a generous supply of leaves, seed balls, twigs and strips of bark. The tiny hairs on the seed balls irritate skin and can cause respiratory distress if inhaled by sensitive people. Wear a mask or respirator and gloves when removing the seeds from a seed ball. The leaves and leaf stems also have a coating of hair when they are new. The hairs shed in spring and can irritate eyes, respiratory track and skin.
A sycamore’s spreading roots often infiltrate water and sewer lines and damage sidewalks and paved areas. The trees are susceptible to several insect infestations and fungal diseases. These conditions rarely kill the tree, but often leave it looking bedraggled by the end of the season.

Tall, fast growing and durable, the sycamore tree—with its large, maple-like leaves—is an elegant addition to your backyard landscape. Its most recognizable feature is its bark that peels away as the trunk expands, revealing the white, tan and green inner bark. However, it is possible that you experience problems with sycamore trees. These can range from sycamore tree pests to sycamore tree diseases. Read on for information on sycamore tree problems.
Avoiding Problems with Sycamore Trees Sycamore trees are vulnerable to diseases and insect pests, just like almost every variety of tree you can plant. Experts advise that you keep your tree healthy, with good cultural practices, as a first line of defense against problems with sycamore trees. Generally, the healthier and more vital the tree, the less it will experience sycamore tree problems. However, even well placed, irrigated and fertilized sycamore trees can get some pests and diseases.
Sycamore Tree Pests One of the most common sycamore tree pests is the sycamore lace bug that gets its name from the lacy pattern on the adult’s wings, head, and chest. The insects feed on the undersides of the sycamore’s leaves. While the sycamore lace bug’s damage is rarely serious, a heavy infestation can slow the tree’s growth. Keep an eye on your tree leaves and wash off bugs with the hose. Insecticides are also available.
Diseases of Sycamore Trees You’ll find that there are quite a few diseases of sycamore trees. The most dangerous of the diseases of sycamore trees is anthracnose, also called leaf and twig blight. It can kill American sycamore, although it does only minor damage to other varieties. This disease can kill twig tips, expanding to buds, new shoots and leaves. The symptom you see most frequently is crinkling and browning of the leaves. This sycamore tree disease is most likely to strike when the weather is cool and wet. Spores from the fungus can be spread by rain and wind. If you give your trees sufficient water and fertilizer, you are unlikely to see this sycamore tree disease.
Another common disease of sycamore trees include powdery mildew fungus. It can be treated with fungicides. Bacterial leaf scorch can also be a problem. It is caused by Xylella fastidiosa, a bacterial pathogen that kills off entire branches of the tree. Pruning infected branches can slow its spread.

Sweet thorn is an attractive and fragrant tree native to southern parts of Africa. Read on to find out more about this lovely landscape tree that grows well under the most difficult Southwestern conditions.
Sweet Thorn Information In their native South Africa, Acacia karoo trees are beneficial wildlife trees. Birds nest in them, and the flowers attract insects to feed the birds. Ten species of butterflies depend on the Acacia sweet thorn for their survival. The sweet gum that oozes from wounds in the bark is a favorite food of many species of wildlife, including the lesser bushbaby and monkeys. Despite the thorns, giraffes love to eat their leaves. Growers in Africa sell the gum as a gum arabic substitute and use the beans as goat and cattle forage. As a legume, the tree can fix nitrogen and improve the soil. It is often used to help restore ruined mine land and other degraded soil. The leaves, bark, gum and roots are used in a wide range of traditional remedies.
Growing Acacia Karroo Trees Sweet thorns (Acacia karroo) are highly ornamental plants that you can grow as a multi-stemmed shrub, or prune to a tree with a single trunk. The plant grows 6 to 12 feet tall with a similar spread. In spring, the tree blooms with an abundance of fragrant, yellow flower clusters that resemble pompoms. The loose canopy allows dappled sunlight through so that grass can grow right up to the trunk. Sweet thorns make attractive specimens, and you can also grow them in containers. They look good on patios and decks, but they produce fierce thorns, so plant them where they won’t come in direct contact with people. A row of closely planted sweet thorn shrubs makes an impenetrable hedge. The trees are useful in helping to control erosion, and they grow well in poor, dry soil. Sweet thorns are hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 9 through 11.
Sweet Thorn Plant Care Sweet thorn trees grow well in any soil as long as it is well-drained. It thrives in dry, arid soils found in the Southwestern U.S. Since it is a legume that can fix nitrogen, it doesn’t need nitrogen fertilizer. For the best growth, water newly planted trees regularly until they are established and growing. It helps to water the tree monthly during extended periods of drought, but under normal conditions, it doesn’t need supplemental irrigation.
If you want to grow the plant as a single-stemmed tree, prune it to a single trunk while it is young. Other than pruning, the only maintenance a sweet thorn tree needs is cleanup. It drops hundreds of 5-inch, brown seed pods in the fall.

Everyone knows what a tree is and what a strawberry is, but what is a strawberry tree? According to strawberry tree information, this is a lovely little evergreen ornamental, offering lovely flowers and strawberry-like fruit. Read on for tips on how to grow a strawberry tree and its care.
What is a Strawberry Tree? The strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) is a charming shrub or small tree that is extremely decorative in your garden. It’s a relative of the madrone tree, and even shares the same common name in some regions. You can grow this plant as a multi-trunked shrub in a hedge, or prune it down to one trunk and grow it as a specimen tree.
Growing Strawberry Trees If you start growing strawberry trees, you’ll find that they have many delightful features. The shedding bark on trunks and branches is attractive. It’s a deep, reddish brown and becomes gnarled as the trees age. The leaves are oval with a serrate edge. They are a shiny dark green, while the petiole stems attaching them to the branches are bright red. The tree produces abundant bunches of tiny white blossoms. They hang like bells at the branch tips and, when pollinated by bees, they produce strawberry-like fruit the following year.
Both flowers and fruits are attractive and ornamental. Unfortunately, strawberry tree information suggests that the fruit, while edible, is quite bland and tastes more like pear than berry. So don’t start growing strawberry trees expecting real strawberries. On the other hand, taste the fruit to see if you like it. Wait until it is ripe and falls from the tree. Alternatively, pick it off the tree when it gets a little squishy.
How to Grow a Strawberry Tree You’ll do best growing strawberry trees in USDA zones 8b through 11. Plant the trees in full sun or partial sun, but be sure you find a site with well-draining soil. Either sand or loam works well. It grows in either acidic or alkaline soil. Strawberry tree care involves regular irrigation, especially the first few years after planting. The tree is reasonably drought tolerant after establishment, and you don’t have to worry about its root breaking up sewers or cement.
