The horehound herb plant is a member of the mint family and looks quite a bit like the popular herb. Crinkled, slightly hairy leaves are characteristic of the horehound plant. The plant is the source of the flavoring for old fashioned horehound candy. The plant is easy to grow in even poor soils and is a hardy perennial over chilly winters down to USDA Zone 4.[图片]What is Horehound? Horehound (Marrubium vulgare) is a woody stemmed herb that can grow 2 to 2 ½ feet tall. It is a wild herb commonly found in disturbed soils, roadsides and dry scrublands. The slightly serrated leaves are arranged alternately on the stem and small clustered white, purple or pink flowers form at the axils in summer. The horehound herb plant is packed with nutritional benefits including high amounts of Vitamins A, B, C, and E. Horehound plants have an interesting history of medicinal uses. The leaves can be dried and used to make tea and the leaves can be stored for up to a year in a jar. The oil can be expressed and used in perfumes and potpourri. The strong flavor is used in cough drops, candy and liqueurs. Stems can be steeped for tea or as a tincture.[图片]How to Plant Horehound The horehound herb plant can be planted from seed, cuttings and division. Plant the seed three weeks before your last expected frost date. The seeds are surface sown and covered with a dusting of soil to prevent the wind from taking them. When planning how to plant horehound remember the germination difficulties of the seed. Even moisture is important to encourage sprouting which is erratic. Seedlings are thinned to 10 inches apart and you can harvest the leaves after the plant flowers.[图片]Tips for Growing Horehound Horehound is grown in full sun and well drained soil. The plant’s other requirements are minimal as it can spring up naturally in nutrient deficient areas and sandy soils. Horehound produces a burr-like seed pod which contains tiny seeds. The seeds are slow to germinate and do not need to be sown deeply. Prior to seeding the horehound plant cultivate the soil and rake it to remove roots, rocks and debris. Once established horehound needs little supplemental irrigation and can actually diminish the plant’s health. The herb is adapted to low fertility areas but an all-purpose fertilizer can be applied in spring to encourage foliage growth. American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius), native to much of the Eastern United States, is valued for its many useful properties. Unfortunately, wild ginseng has been over harvested in its natural environment and is on the threatened plant list in several states. If you have an ideal growing environment and plenty of patience, you may be able to grow your own ginseng. Plants require at least three to five years before reaching maturity.[图片]What is Ginseng? Ginseng is an attractive perennial herb that attains a height of only 1 to 2 inches the first year. The leaf drops in autumn and a new leaf and stem appear in spring. This growth pattern continues until the plant reaches a mature height of 12 to 24 inches. Mature plants have at least three leaves, each with five oval, serrated leaflets. Clusters of greenish-yellow blooms appear in midsummer, followed by bright red, winkled berries. Ginseng Plant Uses The fleshy roots are used in herbal medicines and natural remedies. Various studies indicate that ginseng may boost the immune system, lower blood sugar and cholesterol and provide temporary memory improvements. While the effects haven’t been widely studied, some people believe ginseng may treat a number of conditions, including fatigue, heart disease, menopausal symptoms and high blood pressure. Ginseng is also used in soaps and lotions. In Asia, ginseng is incorporated into toothpaste, gum, candy and soft drinks.[图片]Ginseng Growing Information How to grow ginseng is fairly easy but locating plants may be difficult. Ginseng is usually planted by seed, which must be stratified for two years. However, you may be able to find small rootlets in greenhouses or nurseries. You can plant rhizomes from wild plants if you can find them, but check first; harvesting wild ginseng is illegal in some states. Ginseng requires nearly total shade and no direct afternoon sunlight. A location near mature deciduous trees is ideal. The goal is to mimic the plant’s natural woodland environment as much as possible. The plant thrives in deep, loose soil with a high organic content and a pH of about 5.5.[图片]Ginseng Harvesting Dig ginseng carefully to protect the roots. Wash off excess dirt and spread the roots in a single layer on a screen. Place the roots in a warm, well ventilated room and turn them every day. Small roots may dry in a day, but large roots can take as long as six weeks. Dried ginseng is most often used for teas.

Many herb plants come from the Mediterranean and as such are drought, soil and exposure tolerant. Creeping germander is one of those. Germander herb plants are members of the Lamiaceae or Mint family, which includes lavender and salvia. This is a large genus of evergreens, from ground covers to shrubs to sub shrubs. Creeping germander (Teucrium canadense) is a woody, perennial ground cover varietal that spreads through underground rhizomes and reaches to only about 12 to 18 inches tall and spreading 2 feet across. Germander herb plants bloom lavender-hued flowers in the spring borne off of green serrated foliage.[图片]Germander Growing The adaptable germander ground cover isn’t particularly picky about its location. This herb can be grown in full sun to part shade, in hot climates, or poor and rocky soil. Ideally, however, creeping germander prefers well drained soil (pH of 6.3), although clay will work in a pinch. You can grow these little plants in USDA zones 5-10. Because of its ability to tolerate less than ideal conditions, including drought, creeping germander makes an ideal xeriscape specimen. If you live in a cooler climate, mulch around the plants prior to fall frosts.[图片]How to Use Germander Ground Cover All of the Teucriums are low maintenance plants and are, therefore, perfect for planting in difficult areas of the garden. They all also react beautifully to pruning and can be shaped easily into borders or low hedges, used in knot gardens or among other herbs or in a rockery. Their easygoing care is just one reason to plant creeping germander; they are deer resistant as well! Varieties of Low Growing Germanders Teucrium canadense is just one of several germanders with a creeping habitat. A little easier to find is T. chamaedrys, or wall germander, with a short mounding form up to 1 1/2 feet tall with pinkish purple blooms and oak leaf shaped foliage. Its name derives from the Greek ‘chamai’ for ground and ‘drus’ meaning oak and is indeed a germander found growing wild in Greece and Syria. T.cossoni majoricum, or fruity germander, is a slower growing spreading perennial that is non-invasive with rosy lavender flowers. Flowers are heaviest in the spring but continue to bloom in lesser numbers until fall, which makes the pollinators very happy. Fruity germander has a strong aromatic scent when bruised and does well among rock gardens.[图片]Further Information on Creeping Germander Germander can be propagated via seed and takes about 30 days to germinate, or you may also use cuttings in the spring and/or divide in the fall. Plants should be spaced 6 inches apart for a hedge with the addition of some organic matter worked into the soil. Spider mite infestations are a hazard and can be eradicated with a stream of water or an insecticidal soap.

This germander is a perennial herb native to many areas of North America. Wood sage plants form a low creeping ground cover that is native to the United States. Growing germander wood sage can often be found in shaded to partially shaded, moist areas such as along stream banks, lake shores, marshes, prairies, ditches and pastures. Wood sage wildflowers bloom pinkish purple in the spring through late summer from 4-inch tufts of soft green leaves with fluted or ruffled edges. Blossoms are about a foot in height and are majestic swaying atop a sea of foliage. The flowers make lovely additions to cut flower arrangements. The plant spreads rapaciously along rhizomes. Perfect for covering less than habitable areas of the property, but otherwise must be kept in check. Wood sage was also once used to flavor beer before hops became in vogue.[图片]How to Grow American Germander Wood sage wildflowers are low maintenance, easy to grow native plants. They prefer areas with more moisture or shallow, submerged soils. They are tolerant of a variety of soil, from sandy, loam, clay, limestone and combinations thereof, although they prefer fertile, loamy soil. Although American germander can tolerate poorly drained conditions, it cannot tolerate drought. It is susceptible to foliar disease but less so than other mint family members, such as Bergamot. Plant clumps of wood sage in part shade. It looks like an onion chive but tastes more like garlic. Garlic chives in the garden are also often referred to as Chinese chives plant and as such were first recorded between 4,000-5,000 years ago in China. So, what are garlic chives and how do they differ from ordinary garden chives?[图片]What are Garlic Chives? Its scientific name of Allium tuberosum is indicative of its oniony roots and falls among the family Liliaceae. Unlike onions or other types of garlic, however, the fibrous bulb is not edible but is grown rather for its flowers and stems. It is easy to differentiate between onion chives and garlic chives. Garlic chives have a flat, grass-like leaf, not a hollow one as do onion chives. They grow between 12 to 15 inches tall. Garlic chives make a lovely flower in a border or container plant, and work well in the herb garden. They can be planted along a path or as a dense ground cover too. The small, star-shaped flowers are usually cream colored and born on sturdy stems in June. The flowers can be eaten or dried and made into floral arrangements. The seed heads are also often used in everlasting arrangements or can be allowed to remain and drop seeds for continual reseeding. Growing garlic chives are usually cultivated for culinary uses such as in herbal vinegars, salads, soups, soft cheeses, compound butters, and grilled meat. Of course, its ornamental properties are nothing to sneeze at, and, it attracts butterflies.[图片]How to Grow Wild Garlic Chives I’m betting that everyone will want to know how to grow wild garlic chives in the herb garden, that is if you haven’t already. These little perennials can be planted up to USDA zone 3 in full sun exposure and rich, well-draining soil with a pH of 6.0. Transplant or thin to 6 inches. Plant your garlic chives among carrots, grapes, roses and tomatoes. They will supposedly deter pests such as Japanese beetles, black spot on roses, scab on apples, and mildew on cucurbits. Propagate either from seed or division. Divide the plants in the spring every three years. Propagation from seed may result in an invasion of garlic chives, so you may want to either eat the flowers before they dry and drop seeds or remove them and discard.[图片]Care of Garlic Chives The care of garlic chives is pretty straightforward. Water as needed; although the plants are drought tolerant, they do enjoy moist soil. Other care of garlic chives instructs fertilizing them at the start of the growing season with a slow release fertilizer. After a long term freeze, garlic chives will often die back only to return again come springtime. Garlic chives not only have a multitude of culinary uses, but are said to be beneficial to the digestive system, stimulate appetite, promote blood circulation, and have diuretic properties. Clip the stems either all the way to the ground or with 2 inches remaining to allow the herb to grow anew.

Native to tropical Asia, galangal is a huge perennial plant grown primarily for its ornamental qualities and underground rhizomes, which are used to flavor a variety of ethnic dishes. What to learn how to grow galangal? Read on.[图片]Galangal Plant Information Galangal is a tropical plant that grows in USDA plant hardiness zones 9 and above. The plant requires partial shade and moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Galangal rhizomes, or “hands,” widely available at ethnic supermarkets are ideal for planting. Many gardeners prefer to plant whole rhizomes, but if the rhizomes are too large, cut them into chunks with at least two “eyes.” Keep in mind that larger pieces produce bigger rhizomes at harvest time. Plant galangal after all danger of frost has passed in early spring, but be careful about planting if the soil is too soggy. Although galangal roots need moist soil, they may rot in cool, soggy conditions. Allow 2 to 5 inches between rhizomes. Add a few inches of compost or well-rotted manure if soil is poor. The fennel herb (Foeniculum vulgare) has a long and varied history of use. The Egyptians and the Chinese used it strictly for medicinal purposes and their lore was brought back to Europe by early traders. During the Middle Ages, it was believed to hold magical qualities and people hung fennel plants over their doors to drive away evil spirits. Eventually, someone recognized its use as a flavoring for eggs and fish. Today, its crisp anise flavor makes it a favorite of cooks everywhere. Native to southern Europe, the fennel herb is now naturalized throughout Europe, North America and Australia and grown in gardens all over the world.[图片]Planting Fennel You’ll find two methods of propagation when researching how to grow fennel. Plants may be divided, but this isn’t as easy as it is with other garden plants and often proves unsatisfactory. Like their aforementioned cousins, the fennel herb has a long tap root that doesn’t like to be divided or moved. Planting fennel by seed is the much easier option. Seed can be sown as soon as the soil warms in the spring. Soaking your seeds for a day or two before sowing will ensure better germination. Keep the area moist until the seeds sprout and thin the fennel plants to 12 to 18 inches apart when they are 4 to 6 inches tall. Plants will begin flowering about 90 days after planting.[图片]Growing Fennel The steps for how to grow fennel are fairly simple since the fennel herb is such an agreeable garden plant. It belongs to the carrot and parsley family and is a cousin to other herbs such as caraway, dill and cumin. Like these other herbs, fennel plants produce aromatic fruits which are commonly, though incorrectly, referred to as seeds. When growing fennel, choose a sunny location in the back of a well drained bed. The fine textured foliage can grow up to 6 feet tall and makes an excellent backdrop for other flower planting. Fennel is a short lived perennial that blooms best in the second year. It readily re-seeds and while not considered invasive, it has certainly earned its reputation for aggressive growing. Fennel can be cut back early in the season to encourage bushier growth and should be deadheaded for seed harvest and to prevent over seeding of new plants.[图片]Harvest and dry seeds as the flower heads fade. There’s only one restriction to how to grow fennel: don’t plant it near dill. Cross pollination results in strangely flavored seeds for both plants! Once established, fennel herb doesn’t need much care. It prefers acid soil, appreciates the occasional dose of mild fertilizer and a little additional water if the weather is hot and dry. In addition to its kitchen contributions, planting fennel will attract beneficial insects to the garden and its leaves are a favorite with the caterpillars of the swallowtail butterfly. Known by a multitude of names depending on where it’s cultivated, Ensete false banana plants are an important food crop in many parts of Africa. Ensete ventricosum cultivation can be found in the countries of Ethiopia, Malawi, throughout South Africa, Kenya and Zimbabwe. Let’s learn more about false banana plants.[图片]What is False Banana? A valuable food crop, Ensete ventricosum cultivation provides more food per square meter than any other cereal. Known as “false banana,” Ensete false banana plants look just like their namesakes, only larger (12 meters high), with leaves that are more erect, and inedible fruit. The large leaves are lance shaped, arrayed in a spiral and are bright green struck with a red midrib. The “trunk” of Ensete false banana plant is really three separate sections. So what is false banana used for? Inside this meter-thick trunk or “pseudo-stem” lays the main product of starchy pith, which is pulped and then fermented while buried underground for three to six months. The resulting product is called “kocho,” which is a bit like heavy bread and is eaten with milk, cheese, cabbage, meat and or coffee. The resultant Ensete false banana plants provide not only food, but fiber for making ropes and mats. False banana also has medicinal uses in the healing of wounds and bone breaks, enabling them to heal more quickly.[图片]Additional Information About False Banana This traditional staple crop is highly drought resistant, and in fact, can live up to seven years without water. This provides a reliable food source for the people and ensures no famine period during the drought. Ensete takes four to five years to reach maturation; therefore, plantings are staggered to maintain an available harvest for each season. While wild Ensete is produced from seed propagation, Ensete ventricosum cultivation occurs from suckers, with up to 400 suckers produced from one mother plant. These plants are cultivated in a mixed system interspersing grains like wheat and barley or sorghum, coffee and animals with the Ensete ventricosum cultivation.[图片]Ensete’s Role in Sustainable Farming Ensete acts as a host plant to such crops as coffee. Coffee plants are planted in Ensete’s shade and are nurtured by the vast water reservoir of its fibrous torso. This makes for a symbiotic relationship; a win/win for the farmer of a food crop and cash crop in a sustainable manner. Although a traditional food plant in many parts of Africa, not every culture there cultivates it. Its introduction into more of these areas is extremely important and may be the key to nutritional security, engender rural development and support sustainable land use. As a transitional crop replacing such environmentally damaging species as Eucalyptus, the Ensete plant is seen as a great boon. Proper nutrition is necessary and has been shown to foster higher levels of education, health of course, and general prosperity.
