Many insects eat holes in the leaves of rose bushes. The damage can range from ragged leaves to complete defoliation. The damage, while not pretty, is generally not enough to cause the rose bush to die. Remove the affected leaves by pruning the rose bush. Watch for pests as you work. Rose growers who do not grow organically may find that using a rose fertilizer with systemic insecticide solves rose pest problems. [图片]Leaf-Cutter Bees Hollow rose bush stems attract leaf-cutter bees, according to Texas A & M University. The leaf-cutter bees use the plant material removed from the rose leaves to create walls in the nesting cells where the young bees develop. These bees are important pollinators, according to Clemson University. It is best to simply remove the affected leaves if the holes bother you. Rose Slug Large holes in the leaves of rose bushes will not appear until the rose slug larvae mature, according to the University of California. Young larvae, however, will skeletonize the lower surface of the leaf. Although the larvae may look like a caterpillar, they are not. Remove them immediately by handpicking. Spraying the rose bush with a hard stream of water from a hose can dislodge them from the underside of the leaf. The best time to look for them, according to Clemson University, is at night. Soil drenches, insecticidal soap and horticultural oil are additional options for control of rose slugs. [图片]Japanese Beetles Japanese beetles are one of the worst of the rose pests because they eat both the leaves and the roses. Although it is more common to see leaves skeletonized once the beetles are on them, there are instances where the leaves simply have holes in them. Numerous control options are used for these pests, according to Clemson University. Milky spore will destroy grubs in your lawn but will not do anything for controlling beetles that fly in from other yards. Japanese beetle traps, according to Clemson University, simply attract beetles, so unless you can position it 50 feet from the plants you wish to protect, it is useless. The most effective method is to handpick the beetles during the early evening hours. Brush the beetles into a jar filled with hot soapy water, and put a lid on it. Shake the jar to submerge the beetles. Other natural control methods include poultry, which love to eat these pests, and using netting to keep the beetles off your flowers. Several chemical insecticides, according to Clemson University, work as well.

Rose hips are the fruit developed by rose plants after bloom and they mature on the rose plant through the fall and often into winter if left in place. Most species of roses produce hips in some size and amount, but old garden, heirloom and classic shrub roses will tend to develop more of them than modern, highly bred cultivars, according to the University of Illinois. Pruning rose hips can be done at several points in their development, depending entirely on your goals for plant performance and the look you like in your garden. Rose hips are edible for humans and contain high levels of vitamin C and are prized by birds and other animals as a food source. [图片]Step 1 Harvest fresh rose hips at their peak ripeness in the fall. The rose hips are ripe when they become swollen, the skin becomes a deep rich orange or a bright red, the skin is still relatively smooth and they give just slightly when pressed with your thumb. Allow roughly four months after the first flowers have been pollinated for rose hips to develop and be ready for harvest. Step 2 Groom the rose hip clusters on your plants during the late summer, fall or early winter by selectively removing single rose hips that may have become discolored, damaged or simply look unsightly. Cut the single hips on the thin, short stem that connects the single rose hip to the larger cluster and discard the cutting. Make the cut carefully so as not to disturb or sever the healthy hips from the cluster. [图片]Step 3 Prune away any dried and dessicated rose hips leftover on the plant in early spring after the last hard frost has passed. During the winter, animals or inclement weather will usually strip the hips from the rose plants, but occasionally some remain tethered. Cut back the rose cane to a point of live wood, below where the hips are attached, just 1/8 to 1/4 inch above a healthy bud or leaf axil. The dried-up hips can be composted or discarded.

Roses are among the more difficult flowering bushes to grow, primarily because they are vulnerable to a wide range of plant diseases. Brown spots on rose bush leaves are among the most common problems encountered by gardeners. Those who wish to garden organically don't have the wide arsenal of chemical sprays to turn to that solve all your rose problems in one spray but may have deleterious effects on the environment. Fortunately, organic methods of getting rid of brown spots on rose leaves are available. [图片]Step 1 Prevent brown spots before they become a problem by practicing careful watering and pruning. Brown spots on roses are nearly always the result of a fungus; hence, good moisture control is essential to keeping them at bay. Do not water the leaves of a rose bush, only the root area. Avoid allowing plants to become crowded, and don't plant roses in a high-humidity area of your garden, such as an area that receives less sun or where mold problems have occurred before. Prune rose bushes well to promote healthy growth and clean your pruning shears and any other garden implements that touch roses well, to prevent spreading mold from one plant to another. Step 2 Inspect plants to verify that the problem is, in fact, fungal. True brown spots always are; however, brown curled edges of leaves are a sign of scorching, and small yellowish spots can be a sign of insect infestation. Observe whether the spots are evenly distributed on the leaf or whether the browning is at the edges. If it is primarily at the edges, and the leaves are curled as well as discolored, excessive sun exposure is the culprit, and moving the plant to a shadier area after the last flowering is the best option. If the spots are yellowish, rather than brown, insects may be the cause. Look for bugs on the leaves to confirm. Organic insecticidal soap is the best bet for dealing with infestations. [图片]Step 3 Spray rose leaves with organic fungicide if a fungal problem has been established. If using baking soda instead of purchased spray, mix one part baking soda with 15 parts water, and place in a clean laundry spray bottle. Re-apply fungal spray once a week and after any rainfall. If the infestation is small, remove diseased leaves and discard them in the garbage (do not discard them outdoors, since this can lead to the fungus spreading).

Croton plants (Codiaeum variegatum) are incredibly varied plants that are often grown as houseplants. The croton indoor plant has a reputation for being fussy, but in reality, if you know about caring for a croton houseplant properly, it can make for a resilient and hard-to-kill plant.[图片]Croton Indoor Plant The croton plant is often grown outdoors in tropical climates, but also make excellent houseplants. Crotons come in a wide variety of leaf shapes and colors. Leaves can be short, long, twisted, thin, thick and several of these combined. Colors range from green, variegated, yellow, red, orange, cream, pink and black to a combination of all these. It is safe to say that if you look hard enough, you will find a croton that matches your décor. When considering croton growing, check the variety you have purchased to determine the light needs of your specific variety. Some varieties of croton need high light while others need medium or low light. In general, the more variegated and colorful the croton plant, the more light it will need.[图片]Tips on the Care of Croton Plants Part of the reason that these plants have a reputation for being fussy is because they tend to make a bad first impression. Oftentimes, a person will bring home a new croton from the store and within days, the plant will have lost some and maybe all of its foliage. This leaves the new owner wondering, “How did I fail in caring for a croton houseplant?” The short answer is that you did not fail; this is normal croton behavior. Croton plants do not like to be moved, and when they are moved, they can quickly go into shock which results in leaf loss. Therefore, it’s best to avoid moving the plant as much as possible. In situations where moving the plant is unavoidable (such as when you buy one), don’t panic at the leaf loss. Simply maintain proper care and the plant will regrow its leaves within a short period of time, after which, it will prove to be a resilient houseplant.[图片]Like many houseplants, caring for a croton involves proper watering and humidity. Because it is a tropical plant, it does benefit from high humidity, so placing it on a pebble tray or regular misting will help keep it looking its best. Croton growing in containers should only be watered only when the top of the soil is dry to the touch. Then, they should be watered until the water flows out the bottom of the container. The plant should also be kept away from drafts and cold, as it cannot tolerate temperatures below 60 F. (15 C.). If it is exposed to temps lower than this, the croton will lose leaves and possibly die.

Knockout rose bushes are identifiable by their flower petals that bend outward instead of forward like most rose varieties. The center of the flower has a visible yellow or white section, unlike other roses. Because the Knockout rose bush is a hardy variety of plant, it can quickly grow out of control. Regularly pruning Knockout rose bushes will help control the plant's size and increase the number of roses the bush produces. [图片]Step 1 Wait until late winter or very early spring to prune the Knockout rose bush, before it starts to regrow. Step 2 Examine the rose bush for any limbs that do not have any flower buds, that appear broken or diseased, or that are a darker color than the surrounding stems. Cut off these dead stems with pruning shears 1/2 inch from the base of the bush. Step 3 Locate two or three of the tallest and oldest stems near the center of the bush and prune them off 1 inch from the base of the bush using pruning shears. This opens up the bush and encourages new foliage to grow. [图片]Step 4 Cut off 1/3 of each plant stem using the pruning shears to improve the plant's shape and promote additional blooms. Look for a small bud on the stem that is facing away from the bush and cut the stem just above the bud angled towards the rose bush.

In 1988 rose breeder William Radler developed the Knockout Rose shrub, which has since proven resistant to cold climates and many common rose diseases such as black spot. The best time to plant your Knockout roses is dependent on your location and the maturity of the rose roots or plants you are planting. [图片]Seasons According to Rose Gardening Made Easy, the best times to plant knockout roses are in the early spring or late winter if you live a region that experiences cold winter seasons. If you live in an area with a warm climate such as California, Texas or Florida, you can plant in the fall or early December. Root or Plant If you are planting rose bulbs or roots, you should plant them in the springtime to give them plenty of time to grow before the cold weather arrives. According to Rose Gardening Made Easy, rose plants can be placed in containers or planted in the ground during much of the year, as long as the ground is not frozen or water logged. Considerations Knockout roses have proven their hardiness and durability relative to other types of roses--they are winter hardy to USDA Zone 5 and heat tolerant throughout the U.S. However, a few environmental threats are common to all roses, including Knockouts. Frost and cold weather will stunt the growth of Knockout roots or young plants, and they generally don't fair well when their roots are left to soak in water. Miniature potted roses accent a home's interior with beautiful rose blooms. Caring for mini roses indoors is similar to caring for full-size roses outdoors, only with less work. Indoors, the plant will typically be less prone to pests, and you won't have to worry about weather damage. Less care doesn't mean no care, of course. Keeping certain things in mind will help you maintain your mini roses. [图片]Step 1 Keep your indoor mini roses in a sunny area of your home. The roses will not bloom unless they get enough sunshine. Step 2 Check the rose's soil for dryness each day. If you stick your finger in the pot and the soil is dry an inch down, you need to water. Water your mini roses deeply so the roots get a good drink--continue until the water starts seeping out of the drainage holes in the bottom of the planter. Step 3 Cut off old blooms with a sharp knife or pruning shears. Guide to Houseplants.com advises cutting the stem below the bloom at a 45-degree angle. This is a good time to check for insects on the roses. Deal with insects quickly by squishing them or spraying them with pesticide. Most houseplant pesticides will work fine for insects on mini rose plants. [图片]Step 4 Fertilize mini indoor roses with the same fertilizer you use on outdoor roses. Many brands offer fertilizer geared towards roses. Only fertilize the roses when they're in their growing season (spring and summer). Leaf drop on croton plants can be expected any time the plant is stressed or out of balance. You just need to get to know your croton and how to give croton what it needs to thrive. Read on to learn more about why croton leaves fall off.[图片]Why is My Croton Dropping Leaves? Change can be difficult for a croton plant. A croton plant dropping leaves is often a new plant’s response to being transplanted or transported from the greenhouse to your home. It’s natural for a croton to drop leaves as it adjusts to environmental changes. Once settled, in three or four weeks, your plant will begin to produce new growth. If you haven’t changed the plant’s location recently and your croton leaves fall off, then it’s time to look at other possibilities. Heat and humidity – Croton plants are tropicals, meaning they thrive in warm and humid conditions. If your croton’s leaves fall off, it could be that it’s exposed to cold or hot extremes such as open doors or air ducts. A humidifier or a regular misting with distilled water will also help your croton feel at home. Light – Croton leaf drop and a lack of fiery color can be caused by insufficient sunlight. There are more than 750 varieties of croton plant, some needing more light than others. In general, the more variegated the plant, the more light it craves.[图片]Water – The watering schedule for your other houseplants may not be suitable for your croton. Overwatering can damage the roots and cause croton leaf drop. When the soil on top feels dry, water until the overflow begins to pool in the tray. To prevent root rot, use a pebbled tray or pour off any pooled water after 30 minutes. Underwatering can also cause leaf drop on croton plants. If you’re watering and misting consistently and your croton still seems dry, consider transplanting in fresh, high-quality potting soil that includes peat moss to help retain moisture. Diseases and pests – If you think you’ve taken care of every possible environmental reason your croton plant is dropping leaves, look again. Inspect underneath the leaves for signs of disease or insect pests and treat accordingly.[图片]Here’s the best news: crotons are tough. Even if your croton is brown and leafless, it doesn’t mean that your lovely plant is gone forever. Gently scratch the main stem. If the tissue underneath is still green, your plant is alive and may recover. Continue to care for your plant’s watering and environmental needs.
