Scientific Name Bomarea multiflora (L. f.) Mirb. [图片]Common Names Vine Alstroemeria, Trailing Lily, Climbing Alstroemeria Synonyms Alstroemeria caldasii, Alstroemeria multiflora, Bomarea caldasii, Bomarea oligantha Scientific Classification Family: Alstroemeriaceae Tribe: Alstroemerieae Genus: Bomarea [图片]Flower Color: Bright red to orange Bloom Time: Mid spring to early summer Description Bomarea multiflora is a multi-stemmed climber up to 6.6 feet (2 m), with narrow, oblong, mid- to light green leaves. The narrowly funnel-shaped flowers appear in rounded clusters from late spring to autumn, and are bright red to orange in color, orange or yellow inside, with red, brown, or grown spots, followed by lobed, bright red fruit. [图片]How to Grow and Care To see Bomarea at their best they need a warm position with lots of sunlight (although can be grown under artificial lights). They are quite tough and the plants can survive milder areas if grown outside with roots that will survive to around 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius) if a thick layer of mulch is provided but the plant may die back in prolonged cold periods but will recover by spring time when new growth emerges. Keep plants well watered in the summer months and when winter sets in you should only provide a bare minimum amount of water and the plant should be kept almost dry. Growing Bomarea from seed is not difficult as they have simple needs but a little preparation before the initial planting of the seed is sometimes recommended to yield the best results although the preparation is normally only needed for seeds that have been stored for longer periods. To propagate seeds successfully it is best to sow them in a well draining soil (50/50 mix of cactus compost and perlite will be fine) as soon as they are ripe or as fresh as possible in a propagator or warm greenhouse with temperature regulated at around 68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit (20 to 25 degrees Celsius). Origin Native to Colombia and Ecuador.

The leaves are narrow obovate, up to 16 inches (40 cm) long and up to 8 inches (20 cm) wide. The fruit is up to 4.2 inches (11 cm) in diameter, where a thick spongy fibrous layer covers the 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter seed. Fruit is known as the Box Fruit, due to distinct square like diagonals jutting out from the cross section of the fruit, given its semi spherical shape form from stem altering to a subpyramidal shape at its base. Its large pinkish-white, pompon flowers give off a sickly sweet smell to attract bats and moths which pollinate the flowers at night. [图片]How to Grow and Care Grows naturally in moderately humid to humid tropical coastal climates, generally in areas with annual lows of 68 to 77 °F (20 to 25 °C), annual highs of 81 to 93 °F (27 to 34 °C), annual rainfall of 1000 to 4000 mm and a dry season of 6 months or less. Sea Poison Tree grows best in a fertile, humid, well-drained soil. Prefers a position in full sun or light shade. Established plants are fairly drought tolerant and very tolerant of saline conditions and salt laden winds. They thrive in the wild where their roots dabbling in the brackish waters of lagoons, inlets, estuaries and seasonally flooded coastal regions. New plants are usually grown from seed. It performs best on free draining sand and loam soils of a slightly acid to alkaline nature, generally with a pH of 6.0 to 8.5 and on sites with full sun exposure. It has good tolerance to salt, wind, tidal flooding and coral derived limestone soils. Origin Native to mangrove habitats on the tropical coasts and islands of the Indian Ocean and western Pacific Ocean from Zanzibar east to Taiwan, the Philippines, Fiji, New Caledonia, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, the Cook Islands, Wallis and Futuna and French Polynesia.

Scientific Name Rudbeckia hirta L. [图片]Common Names Black Eyed Susan, Brown Eyed Susan, Brown Betty, Gloriosa Daisy, Golden Jerusalem, Poorland Daisy, Yellow Daisy Synonyms Rudbeckia hirta var. hirta, Rudbeckia hirta f. hirta, Centrocarpha gracilis, Centrocarpha hirta, Coreopsis hirta Scientific Classification Family: Asteraceae Genus: Rudbeckia [图片]Flower Color: Yellow Bloom Time: Late summer and early autumn Description Rudbeckia hirta is an upright annual (sometimes biennial or perennial), up to 39 inches (1 m) tall and up to 18 inches (45 cm) wide. The leaves are alternate, mostly basal, up to 7 inches (17.5 cm) long, covered by coarse hair, with stout branching stems and daisy-like, composite flowers appearing in late summer and early autumn. The flowers are up to 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter, with yellow ray-florets circling conspicuous brown or black, dome-shaped disc-florets. [图片]How to Grow and Care Black Eyed Susan plants are drought resistant, self-seeding and grow in a variety of soils. Growing Black Eyed Susans prefer a neutral soil pH and a full sun to light shade location. Black Eyed Susan care will often include deadheading the spent blooms of the flower. Deadheading encourages more blooms and a sturdier, more compact plant. It also can stop or slow the spread of the Black Eyed Susan flower, as seeds are contained in the blooms. Seeds may be allowed to dry on the stem for reseeding or collected and dried in other ways for replanting in other areas. Seeds do not necessarily grow to the same height as the parent from which they were collected. The Black Eyed Susan flower attracts butterflies, bees and other pollinators to the garden. Deer, rabbits and other wildlife may be drawn to Black Eyed Susans, which they consume or use for shelter. When planted in the garden, plant the Black Eyed Susan flower near Lavender, Rosemary or other repellent plants to keep wildlife at bay. Origin Native to the Eastern and Central United States.

[图片]Common Names Sweet Briar, Sweet Briar Rose, Sweet Brier, Eglantine, Eglantine Rose Synonyms Chabertia rubiginosa, Laggeria eglanteria, Rosa x almeriensis, Rosa x braunii, Rosa eglanteria, Rosa floribunda, Rosa moutinii, Rosa rugibinosa, Rosa uliginosa Scientific Classification Family: Rosaceae Subfamily: Rosoideae Genus: Rosa [图片]Flower Color: Pink with a white base Bloom Time: Late spring to mid summer Description Rosa rubiginosa is a dense, deciduous shrub up to 10 feet (3 m) high and across, with the stems bearing numerous hooked prickles. The foliage has a strong apple-like fragrance. The leaves are pinnate, up to 3.6 inches (9 cm) long, with 5 to 9 rounded to oval leaflets with a serrated margin, and numerous glandular hairs. The flowers are up to 1.2 inches (3 cm) in diameter, the 5 petals being pink with a white base, and the numerous stamens yellow. The flowers are produced in clusters of 2 to 7 together, from late spring to mid summer. The fruit is a globose to oblong red hip, up to 0.8 inch (2 cm) diameter. Hardiness USDA hardiness zone 4a to 9b: from −30 °F (−34.4 °C) to 30 °F (−1.1 °C). [图片]How to Grow and Care When growing roses, it’s important to choose a site receiving at least 6 hours of sun each day. Rose bushes must also be located in well-drained, fertile soil. Plant dormant roses in early spring (or fall). Potted plants can be planted any time between spring and fall, but preferably spring. If you’re planting bare root roses, presoak them in water for at least 24 hours prior to placing them in the ground. Both bare root and potted rose bushes need to be planted about 2 feet (60 cm) deep, with the hole large enough to accommodate the roots. Backfill the hole with soil, adding some well-rotted manure in with it and water thoroughly. Then mound up additional soil around the base of the plant. Note that this is not necessary for actively growing roses. Caring for rose bushes is important to their overall health and vigor, especially when it comes to watering. Roses require at least an inch (2.5 cm) of water weekly throughout their growing season, beginning in spring or following spring planting. Origin Native to Europe and western Asia.

Scientific Name Rhododendron ferrugineum L. [图片]Common Names Alpenrose, Snow Rose, Rusty-leaved Alpenrose, Alpine Rose Synonyms Azalea ferruginea, Chamaerhododendron ferrugineum, Plinthocroma ferrugineum Scientific Classification Family: Ericaceae Subfamily: Ericoideae Tribe: Rhodoreae Genus: Rhododendron [图片]Flower Color: Pinkish-red Bloom Time: Summer Description Rhododendron ferrugineum is an evergreen shrub that grows up to 3.3 feet (1 m) tall and produces clusters of pinkish-red, bell-shaped flowers throughout the summer. The undersides of the leaves are covered in rust-brown spots, which give the species its scientific name. [图片]How to Grow and Care Once properly located in the planting bed, water thoroughly and cover with an organic mulch which will break down to supply nutrients as it decomposes. A pine bark covering applied at 2 inches (5 cm) is thought to inhibit fungi that cause root rot. Do not mulch with peat moss, as it is difficult to rewet after it has dried out. Proper mulching will decrease the need for future care. Rhododendron care includes a yearly fertilization which is best applied in fall, following a hard freeze or in early spring. Use a fertilizer for acid loving plants, such as organic cottonseed meal. The organic material you have worked into the soil previously will break down to provided some of the necessary nutrients. Consistently moist soil is needed for proper care, but too much water creates problems for the growing Rhododendron. When leaves curl and twist, this indicates that water is needed immediately. The Rhododendron bush should not be allowed to go through the stress of wilting. Origin It is distributed in the Alps, Pyrenees, Jura and northern Apennines.
