Quarantine When new succulent plants are aquired, it is a good idea to keep them separate from the rest of the collection for a few weeks so that obvious pests can be spotted. This allows time for eggs of pests to hatch and the progeny dealt with. A good way to do this is to maintain a "quarantine" window ledge separate from other plants. Many growers repot newly aquired plants into their favourite growing medium, and this is a good occasion to examine the general condition of the roots and check for pests such as root mealy bugs. It may seem over-cautious, but many people like to treat their new plant with systemic insecticide while re-potting. This doubtless helps to avoid introduction of new pests into the collection. Repotting with "sterilised" compost which has been heated sufficiently to kill insects, larvae and eggs is a good idea. [图片]Inspection A regular check on the condition of your succulent plants, perhaps while you are watering them, will help you to spot the early signs of pests and diseases which are best treated early before serious damage is done to the plants, or before they can spread through the collection. However, never assume that just one plant in a collection is affected. Pests may well have spread to other specimens nearby, even if you can not see them. Ants "farm" mealy bugs for their honeydew secretions and may help to spread them through the collection. [图片]Also watch how well individual plants are growing. Poor growth, a sudden change in condition or a limp plant which fails to take up water can be a warning sign of damaged roots caused by e.g. root mealy bugs, vine weevil, or roots rotting as a result of over-watering. [图片]HygieneCleanliness in the greenhouse is an important measure in preventing outbreaks of pests and diseases. Always remove dead leaves and flowers as soon as possible. Some growers like to remove flower stalks of e.g. Adromischus before they flower and drip nectar on the plants, potentiating moulds. Leaf litter provides an ideal hiding place for pests. If wet by watering, dead plant material is a breeding ground for fungi and production of their spores. Tidy up debris in the green house left from re-potting and propagation. Treatment of the ground under the staging, walkways and areas of paving with a disinfectant solution e.g. Jeyes Fluid is a smelly but effective traditional way of discouraging pests and diseases.

General comments about pest control Many common pests can be controlled by use of systemic insecticides, contact insecticides, insecticidal soaps and, in some cases, natural predators. Systemic insecticides are very effective as they are absorbed by the plant, making its sap poisonous to the pests. However, they may be toxic to people and absorbed through the skin in the same way. Dimethoate was an effective ingredient of systemic insecticides, but unfortunately it has generally been withdrawn from the non-professional market in EC countries. [图片]The best systemic insecticides currently available are based on Imidacloprid. In the UK this is marketed as "Provado Vine Weevil Killer," but is effective against a wide range of insects including mealy bugs. In the USA Bayer market a formulation containing Imidacloprid. Plants should be watered with this insecticide during the growing season. The substance is taken up into the plant which then becomes toxic to insects. A single treatment lasts for several months. Imidacloprid is not very effective against red spider. It is relatively low in toxicicity to most animals other than insects and application without spraying minimises contact. Neonicotinoid (similar to Nicotine) insecticides are getting a bad press lately, as harmful to beneficial insects such as bees and butterflies, but it's unlikely that bees would be harmed by indoor use of Imidacloprid on a collection of succulent plants. [图片]Contact insecticides such as Malathion can also be effective, but only at the time of application and all parts of the plant must be covered. Unfortunately, Malathion and its derivastives are toxic to Crassulaceae and some other succulents. A range of insecticidal soaps are also available, and some people swear by spraying with diluted washing-up liquid (a few drops in a litre), which at least is fairly harmless. [图片]It is worth noting that repeated use of insecticides can select for resistant insects among any survivors (evolution in action !). It is not yet clear whether resistance will develop to Imidacloprid or to the new insecticidal soaps. This can be avoided by ensuring that treatments are as thorough as possible, so there are no survivors and by using more than one insecticide in rotation. [图片]Biological controls are available for some pests but are incompatible with insecticides. Use one or the other. It is difficult to obtain a predator/prey balance that allows long-term protection in a small collection. I'd question the efficacy of biological controls in a small glasshouse, but it may be worth experimenting with these if you dislike using insecticides.

These are a very common pest of cacti and succulents, and potentially a huge topic ! There are many species of mealy bugs, but these insects are all small and hard to identify by amateur growers. Their host-plant range and individual sensitivity to control measures are poorly characterised anyway. There are probably several species of mealy bug going around collections in the UK and elsewhere. From time to time one certainly sees mealy bugs which "look different". These insects are small and grey or light brown and so difficult to see among the spines of cacti. Their general appearance is reminiscent of tiny woodlice about 2-3 mm long. A squashed mealy bug often leaves a characteristic red stain: the cochineal insect, from which a food colourant is made, is a type of mealy bug. Recently, a species that leaves a green stain has appeared in the UK. Mealy bugs often accumulate to feed on the tender tissues at or near the growing point. Very often, when nesting, they hide around the base of succulent plants, just below soil level or under the old dried leaves of Mesembs such as Lithops. [图片]The first sign of a problem is often small balls of white fluff on the plant, on cactus spines or around the base or under the rim of pots. These are where the females are nesting up inside the fluff and producing young, which may be either born live or produced from eggs. There may also be some sugary honeydew produced by feeding mealy bugs, which can encourage black mould. Ants "farm" mealy bugs for their honeydew secretions and may help to spread them through the collection, so it is a good idea to discourage invasive ants even though they are not intrinsically harmful to succulent plants. [图片]Control of mealy bugs If there are only numbers of mealy bugs to be dealt with, dabbing a little methylated spirit (industrial alcohol, denatured alcohol) will kill them. Some people also spray their plants with methylated spirit diluted at least 1:3 with water. If you try this, remember that the fumes are potentially toxic and flammable and the liquid could harm the epidermis of delicate plants. Small numbers can be removed carefully with a pin, but it is hard to spot them all. For large or widespread infestations, use regular applications (weekly for several weeks) of insecticidal sprays (read the label to find pests controlled, use and precautions). Wash off as many of the mealy bugs as possible with a high pressure water jet from a sprayer, and treat the plant with a contact insecticide such as malathion (not for Crassulaceae) or a systemic insecticide. Watering with Imidacloprid (Provado Vine Weevil Killer) seems to be very effective against mealy bugs and has not so far shown any sign of toxicity to a wide range of succulent plants. Some fumigant smoke cones are also effective against mealy bugs, and have the advantage of being a dry treatment, but require repeated use to be really effective. Give the cone a good shake before igniting to reduce the risk of poor burning, place on a non-flammable surface and retire promptly after lighting the blue touch-paper fuse, before smoke emission begins. I like to do a preventative fumigation in the Spring and Autumn when it is too cold to spray or water the plants with systemic insecticide, but it is getting hard to find effective types of smoke cone in the UK. [图片]Biological control of mealy bugs Introduce the predator Cryptolaemus montrouzeri, which requires temperatures of at least 70°F (21°C). It is difficult to obtain a predator/prey balance that allows long-term protection in a small collection.

These are also very common pests of cacti and succulents, but are found only on the roots of infested plants where they do considerable damage. This may lead to the plant rotting where the damage allows fungal or bacterial infections to enter the plant tissues. They produce powdery white or white fluffy deposits in the soil which may sometimes also be seen underneath the pot. Their general appearance is reminiscent of tiny pinkish-brown woodlice (2-3 mm long) in the soil and roots. [图片]Control of root mealy bugs Use regular applications (weekly for several weeks) of insecticide (read the label to find pests controlled, use and precautions) watered into the soil, or immerse the plant pot up to the top of the soil in a bucket of insecticide with a couple of drops of washing-up liquid to help wetting of the soil. The plant will need to be carefully dried out after a soaking, especially if treatment must be carried out in cold weather.[图片]As a preventative measure, ground up moth balls added to the potting mix seem to discourage infestation by root mealy bug, and probably discourages other insects. However, the chemicals in the moth balls can cause damage to plastic plant pots and are best used with clay pots. ( NB. In the UK, chemicals must be used only as directed on the label: other use could be considered an offence. ) Root mealy bugs also seem to prefer peat-based mixtures to soil-based composts, although not exclusively.

Field mice may enter glasshouses in the autumn looking for somewhere warm to spend the winter, or at other times in the course of foraging. Mice tend to take a bite out of a lot of potential foodstuffs, rather than eating a lot of one food, and tend to subsequently avoid foods that were unpalatable or harmful to them. Consequently, a mouse may be very destructive to many plants in a short time, especially choice or show specimens which they seem to target carefully. [图片]Control of Mice Another huge topic. Briefly, mice can be trapped live using special live-traps placed near walls, and the mouse released at a great distance from the house. If you do this, inspect the traps often and put a piece of carrot in the trap to provide moisture, or the mouse may die of dehydration before you find it. [图片]Alternatively, there are conventional traps which kill the mouse and a range of poisonous baits on sale in most good hardware shops. A cat is also said to be an effective biological control for mice. You could also try putting balls of cotton wool impregnated with peppermint oil around your growing area. This interferes with their sense of smell and may discourage mice from the immediate area but the oil must be replaced frequently. Rats are really a matter for professional exterminators, but a range of poisonous baits are available to control them.

The mites are exceedingly small and a strong magnifying glass is needed to see them clearly. An early sign of their presence is the appearance of brown dots where the plant epidermis has been damaged, merging into confluent scarring and sometimes webbing on the plants. The harmful microscopic red spider mites, which damage plants, should not be confused with a commonly seen, much larger red mite 2-3 mm across which is a harmless predator. [图片]Control of red spider mite The reddish-brown mites thrive in hot dry conditions and dislike humid conditions, so overhead watering and spraying plants may discourage mite attack. They are affected to some extent by insecticides (check labels), but a miticide is really needed to control them properly. Unfortunately, effective miticides are not available to amateurs. [图片]Biological control of red spider mite A predator Phytoseiulus persimilis is available but requires temperatures over at least 70°F (21°C). Se dividen en: Caducas Si sólo viven un periodo vegetativo y caen a su final. Perennes o persistentes Dduran más de un periodo vegetativo. Marcescentes Si ya secas, se mantienen en el árbol hasta la formación de las próximas. Modificaciones que pueden adoptar las hojas Entre las modificaciones que pueden adoptar las hojas destacan las brácteas, las piezas florales, los zarcillos foliares, las escamas, las espinas foliares, las ascidias y los filodios.Las brácteas son hojas modificadas, de cuya axila nacen ramas florales; su aspecto, forma y color son muy variados. Las piezas florales (estambres, carpelos, pétalos y sépalos) también son hojas modificadas. Los zarcillos son hojas que se transforman totalmente, o sólo en ciertos folíolos, en filamentos cilíndricos, sencillos o ramificados, que se arrollan alrededor de los soportes, ejemplo del guisante o la calabaza. Las escamas o catáfilos, son hojitas, a veces carnosas, que sirven de protección a órganos delicados, como yemas u órganos subterráneos. Las espinas foliares son estructuras duras acabadas en punta que, como hojas que son, desgarran los tejidos al arrancarlas, ejemplo de los cardos, cactos, agracejo, etc.; esto les diferencia de los aguijones, que, por ser modificaciones epidérmicas, se arrancan con facilidad, como es el caso de las rosas. Las ascidias son hojas en forma de recipiente o jarra, presentes en algunas plantas insectívoras como la nepentes. Los filodios son hojas cuyo pecíolo se ha aplanado en forma de lámina con aspecto de hoja, ejemplo de las acacias y eucaliptos. Muchas especies presentan polimorfismo foliar, que consiste en la presencia de hojas de forma distinta, en diversos grados, sobre la misma planta, ejemplo de los vegetales acuáticos como los ranúnculos, o las judías, hiedra, encina, acebo, etc. Estructura Estructuralmente, la mayor parte de las hojas tienen forma dorsiventral, con haz y envés claramente diferenciados denominadas bifaciales. Ambas caras pueden ser iguales llamadas equifaciales o incluso estar reducido el haz, siendo la superficie total de la hoja el envés, ejemplo de algunas monocotiledóneas. Lo habitual es que la bifacialidad foliar quede marcada también en la estructura anatómica del limbo. El pecíolo, por su parte, tiene estructura similar a la del tallo, aunque su simetría es bilateral, en lugar de radiada. De fuera adentro se distinguen: una epidermis cutinizada, un parénquima en empalizada, otro parénquima lagunar y los haces vasculares que constituyen el rastro foliar. En ellos el floema se sitúa por debajo del xilema, con respecto al haz.

Clasificación de las hojas (continuación) Tipos de hojas según las características y aspecto del limbo egún la composición de las hojas en base a las características y aspecto del limbo, se las clasifica en simples o sencillas y compuestas. En las primeras, el pecíolo no se ramifica, siendo el limbo de una sola pieza. Las hojas compuestas presentan el limbo dividido en hojitas (los folíolos) que a su vez pueden subdividirse. La diferencia entre una hoja verdadera y un folíolo (que pueden ser grandes), reside en que en la axila de la primera hay una yema, de la que carecen los folíolos. Las hojas compuestas pueden ser: Paripinnadas Cuando disponen de un número par de foliolos. Imparipinnadas Cuando se muestra un foliolo terminal, y por tanto existe un número impar de foliolos. Según la forma del limbo, las hojas se pueden clasificar en: Acorazonadas Cuando su forma recuerda la de un corazón. Lanceoladas Cuando presenta una forma de lanza. Sagitadas Cuando su forma recuerda la de una saeta. Bilobuladas Cuando está partida o hendida en dos lóbulos, ejemplo del Ginkgo biloba. Elípticas Cuando presenta la forma de una elipse. Ovaladas Cuando tiene forma de óvalo. Compuestas palmeadas: cuando una hoja compuesta presenta divisiones o foliolos dispuestos como los dedos de una mano. Clasificación de las hojas La enorme variabilidad de las hojas permite clasificarlas en diversos tipos atendiendo a diferentes criterios de formas y disposición de cada uno de sus elementos: Por su nervadura Por el número y disposición de los folíolos Por su forma general Por la forma del borde Por la forma del limbo Por la forma del ápice Por la forma del margen Por la forma de la base Etc. Tipos de hojas según su nervadura La nervadura o nerviación de las hojas varía dependiendo de las especies, aunque las más comunes son las de nervadura paralela o paralelinervias, en que que las nervaduras se extienden paralelamente desde su base; y las de nervadura reticular, en las que existen nervios principales, de los que salen, a modo de red, otros nervios secundarios o menores en disposición de retículo. De éstos tipos generales de hojas también se pueden deducir otros, como las radiales, penninervias, curvinervias, etc. A continuación se detallan los tipos comunes de hojas según su nervadura: Paralelinervia Cuando todos los nervios son paralelos y parten longitudinalmente del pecíolo a lo largo de la hoja, como son las hojas de las monocotiledóneas. Penninervia o pinnatinervia Cuando hay un nervio central, y todos los demás nacen a lo largo de su eje, como las barbas de la pluma de un ave cuando parten del raquis (ejemplo de la hoja del avellano). Palmatinervias Cuando el pecíolo, en la unión con la hoja, se ramifica en nervios diferentes. Curvinervia Cuando varios nervios que parten del pecíolo no se extienden paralelamente, sino que describen una curva más o menos suave a lo largo de toda la hoja hasta su ápice, ejemplo de la hoja del llantén. Palmeada Cuando hay más de un nervio principal ramificado que sale del pecíolo, a modo de los dedos de una mano. Las funciones Las hojas son apéndices caulinares, en general verdes y aplanadas, que nacen y se expanden lateralmente en los nudos de los tallos y ramificaciones. Se desarrollan a partir de los denominados primordios foliares que se forman gracias a la actividad del llamado meristemo apical. La función principal de las hojas es realizar la fotosíntesis en los cloroplastos de las células; debido a lo cual, los vegetales superiores son, junto a los otros organismos fotosintéticos, los productores primarios en la biosfera. Las hojas realizan el intercambio de gases (fotosíntesis y respiración) a través de sus estomas aeríferos, por los que además transpiran el vapor de agua (evapotranspiración). [图片]Las hojas son apéndices caulinares de los tallos que tienen la función de realizar la fotosíntesis A través de los estomas de las hojas, la planta toma el dióxido de carbono, CO2, de la atmósfera, y expulsa el O2 procedente de la fotólisis del H2O, proceso incluido en la fotosíntesis. Este oxígeno es fundamental para la vida en nuestro planeta. Las partes de la hoja Típicamente, en la hoja se distinguen tres partes: Limbo Pecíolo Vaina Limbo El limbo o lámina, es la parte generalmente laminar plana, verde y ancha de la hoja; la cara superior se llama haz y la inferior envés; el haz suele ser de color oscuro y el envés algo más claro. La base del limbo se agranda a veces para albergar la yema, siempre presente en la axila de la hoja (yema axilar). El limbo está surcado por una serie de líneas o cordones, perfectamente visibles al trasluz y salientes por el envés, llamadas nerviaciones, nervaduras o nervios. Son hacecillos de conductos vasculares prolongación y ramificación de los del pecíolo, cuya misión es aportar la savia bruta y retirar la elaborada. En muchas hojas el nervio principal es central y finaliza en la punta del limbo (el ápice); del nervio principal suelen partir otros nervios secundarios. Mediante las nervaduras del limbo se puede realizar clasificaciones de las hojas (véase más abajo la clasificación de las hojas según su nervadura). [图片]Pecíolo El pecíolo o pedúnculo foliar, es el filamento, en general delgado y de color verde, que une el limbo al tallo. Su haz suele ser plano o cóncavo, mientras que su envés suele ser convexo. Sus tejidos vasculares, que comunican la hoja con el tallo, permiten la llegada del agua y los minerales absorbidos por la raíz. Tiene además la capacidad de orientar a la hoja en la dirección de la luz solar. Vaina La vaina es la terminación ensanchada del pecíolo en el punto de unión con el tallo. Puede rodear al tallo muy claramente, como es el caso de la vaina cilíndrica de las gramíneas, o no existir. Algunas vainas llevan una prolongación membranosa en su parte superior llamada lígula. En la base del pecíolo, en ciertas especies, suelen encontrarse unas pequeñas laminillas o apéndices de distintos tipos, que pueden ser glandulares, espinosas, foliáceas o escamiformes, que reciben el nombre de estípulas. Las hojas sin pecíolo se llaman sentadas o sésiles.
