Scientific Name Aquilegia vulgaris L. [图片]Common Names Columbine, European Columbine, European Crowfoot, Common Columbine, Granny’s Nightcap, Granny’s Bonnet, Granny Bonnets, Capon’s Feather Synonyms Aquilegia aggericola, Aquilegia collina, Aquilegia dumeticola, Aquilegia inversa, Aquilegia stellata, Aquilegia winterbottomiana Scientific Classification Family: Ranunculaceae Subfamily: Isopyroideae Tribe: Isopyreae Subtribe: Isopyrinae Genus: Aquilegia [图片]Flower Color: Blue (sometimes purple, pink, light red and white) Bloom Time: Summer Description Aquilegia vulgaris is a flowering herbaceous perennial plant, up to 4 feet (1.2 m) tall, with branched, thinly hairy stems. The leaves are pinnate, with the basal leaflets themselves trifoliate. The flowers are blue (sometimes purple, pink, light red and white), up to 2 inches (5 cm) wide, pendent or horizontal with hooked spurs, and appear in early Summer. [图片]How to Grow and Care Columbnie plants can handle full sun. It’s the combination of heat and dry soil they don’t like and mulching will help alleviate that. They will self-sow, but new plants can be lost if the summer gets to hot. Also, plants tend to be short lived, fading out within 3 years. Hedge your bets and save some seed to sow in the fall or falling spring. Keep in mind that Columbine varieties readily cross pollinate. If you plant more than one variety, be prepared to see new colors and combinations. If self-sowing becomes a nuisance, shear the plants back in mid-summer, to prevent seed pods from forming. You can start Columbine from seed or plant. Seeds can be direct sown throughout spring. The seeds need light to germinate, so simply press them on the soil surface and barely cover with soil. Since Columbine is a perennial, it will take 2 years from planting seed, for them to bloom. Origin Native to Europe.

Scientific Name Amborella trichopoda Baill. Scientific Classification Family: Amborellaceae Genus: Amborella [图片]Flower Color: Creamy white Bloom Time: March to May Description Amborella trichopoda is a small, tropical sprawling shrub or small tree, up to 26 feet (8 m) high, endemic to New Caledonia. It is the only species in the genus Amborella, which is the only member of the family Amborellaceae. The evergreen leaves are small, white to yellow and up to 4 inches (10 cm) long. The small, creamy white, inconspicuous flowers are arranged in terminal inflorescences of 2 to 30 flowers, up to 0.16 inches (4 mm) in diameter, with 7 or 8 tepals. [图片]Amborella – Record of the Evolution of Flowering Plants Amborella is a rare understory shrub or small tree found only on the island of New Caledonia. Amborella trichopoda is the only species in the genus, and is the only member of the family Amborellaceae. It was known for some time already, that Amborella wood has a peculiar character – it lacks the vessels characteristic of most flowering plants. This lack of vessels is a trait that is more typically associated with conifers, and is therefore thought to be a primitive trait in the evolution of plants in general.[图片]There are a few lineages of flowering plants which also lack vessels and these lineages are also considered to be very old plant lineages. However, it was only at the advent of the molecular age that Amborella was finally assigned it’s rightful place at or near the base of all flowering plant lineages. Amborella thus represents a line of flowering plants that diverged very early (about 130 million years ago) from all the other known species of flowering plants. Origin Endemic to the main island Grande Terre of New Caledonia.

Scientific Name Alstroemeria pulchella L.f. [图片]Common Names Parrot Lily, Parrot Flower, Peruvian Lily, Lily of the Incas, Princess Lily, New Zealand Christmas Bell Synonyms Alstroemeria atrorubra, Alstroemeria banksiana, Alstroemeria hassleriana, Alstroemeria psittacina, Alstroemeria psittacina var. longipedunculata, Lilavia psittacina Scientific Classification Family: Alstroemeriaceae Тribe: Alstroemerieae Genus: Alstroemeria [图片]Flower Color: Crimson and light green Bloom Time: Late spring through autumn Description Alstroemeria psittacina is a tuberous perennial with lush, green foliage up to 2 feet (60 cm) tall. From late spring through autumn, it sends up to 3 foot (90 cm) tall flower stalks, each topped with about 5 to 9 speckled flowers in a radial pattern. The trumpet-shaped flowers demand attention, with their unusual combination of crimson and light green. The blooms make excellent cut flowers, often lasting 2 weeks in a vase. [图片]How to Grow and Care The best place to plant Peruvian Lily is where they will either receive full sun or a slightly shaded area. At least allow them to have good morning sun. Drainage is important for the survival of Peruvian Lily, so be sure it drains well. Observe how the proposed area you want to plant responds after a good rain. If it still has standing water after about 5 hours, look for another location. If you’re limited to a certain location which holds water too long, build up the soil to a higher level to improve its drainage capabilities. The plant will rot if it sits in standing water or soggy soil. You can plant Alstroemeria after the last frost is over. If you have your bare root plants but the ground is still hard or too wet, place the roots in a pot until the ground is ready for them. Keep them in a cool area while you’re waiting. Don’t water them much before placing them in the soil and are still in the pots. Origin Native to Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay.

Scientific Name Aloe vera (L.) Burm.f. [图片]Common Names Aloe Vera, Medicinal Aloe, Barbados Aloe, Chinese Aloe, Indian Aloe, Medicine Plant, True Aloe, Burn Aloe, First Aid Plant, Bitter Aloe, Wand of Heaven, Miracle Plant, Savila Synonyms Aloe vulgaris, Aloe vera var. lanzae, Aloe indica, Aloe barbadensis var. chinensis, Aloe elongata, Aloe vera var. littoralis, Aloe perfoliata var. vera, Aloe perfoliata var. barbadensis, Aloe flava, Aloe chinensis, Aloe barbadensis, Aloe lanzae Scientific Classification Family: Xanthorrhoeaceae Subfamily: Asphodeloideae Genus: Aloe [图片]Flower Color: Yellow Bloom Time: Summer Description Aloe vera is a stemless or very short-stemmed succulent plant growing up to 39 inches (100 cm) tall, spreading by offsets. The leaves are thick and fleshy, green to grey-green, with some varieties showing white flecks on the upper and lower stem surfaces. The margin of the leaf is serrated and has small white teeth. The flowers are produced in summer on a spike up to 35 inches (90 cm) tall, each flower being pendulous, with a yellow tubular corolla up to 1.2 inches (3 cm) long. [图片]How to Grow and Care The first step in Aloe Vera care is to realize that this plant is a succulent. Like cacti, succulents do best in dry conditions. When growing plants, plant them in a cactus potting soil mix or a regular potting soil that has been amended with additional perlite or building sand. Also, make sure that the pot has plenty of drainage holes. It cannot tolerate standing water. One important thing in the care of Aloe Vera houseplants is that they have proper light. They need bright light, so they do best in south- or west-facing windows. Another important part of how to grow an Aloe Vera is to water the plant properly. The soil should be allowed to go completely dry before being watered. When the plant is watered, the soil should be thoroughly drenched, but the water should be allowed to drain freely from the soil… – See more at: How to Grow and Care for Aloe Vera. Uses Aloe vera has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries. Native to North Africa, Southern Europe, and the Canary Islands, today it is grown in tropical climates worldwide. From relieving heartburn to slowing the spread of cancer, researchers are only first beginning to unlock all of the powerful uses of this universal plant and its many amazing byproducts. Origin Native to the arid regions of north-eastern and southern parts of Africa and Madagascar.

Scientific Name Aloe aristata Haw. [图片]Common Names Lace Aloe, Torch Plant Scientific Classification Family: Xanthorrhoeaceae Subfamily: Asphodeloideae Genus: Aloe [图片]Flower Color: Orange-red Bloom Time: Fall Description Aloe aristata is a stemless, no more than 8 to 12 inches (20 to 30 cm) tall, clump-forming succulent with dense rosettes of stubby, lance-shaped, toothed, white-margined, dark green leaves, up to 4 inches (10 cm) long, with small white spots and soft white spines, particularly beneath. In the fall, produces terminal panicles, up to 20 inches (50 cm) tall, 2 to 6 branched, bearing cylindrical, orange-red flowers, up to 1,5 inches (4 cm) long. [图片]How to Grow and Care In order to grow Aloe aristata in temperate climates they will need to be taken inside during the coldest weather and keep them in bright sunlight during the summer. This species is hardier than many other species within its genus, but will still appreciate the warmth. It requires very little maintenance, making it an ideal choice for novice gardeners. They flower freely in the summer and the soft-orange flowers are a wonderful addition to the arid garden. This genus is well known for its ease of cultivation, but they are sensitive to excessive irrigation. Provide regular watering in spring and summer to make the soil thoroughly moist then allow the soil to dry before watering again. In winter (during the dormant season) water sparingly or not at all, as it is prone to rotting; a thin layer of gravel on top of the soil will help to prevent this… – See more at. Origin Native to Lesotho and South Africa (Northern Cape, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal).

Scientific Name Agave pelona Gentry [图片]Common Names Mescal Pelon, Mexican Agave Scientific Classification Family: Asparagaceae Subfamily: Agavoideae Genus: Agave [图片]Flower Color: Deep red Bloom Time: Late winter/early spring Description Agave pelona is a superb, solitary succulent plant, similar to Agave ocahui. It forms a beautifully rounded rosette up to 32 inches (80 cm) in diameter, consisting of numerous, hard, glossy green leaves, often with a reddish tinge, that have pale, thornless margins and a pale apical spine, up to 3 inches (7.5 cm) long. The 10 feet (3 m) tall flower spike carries striking, deep red, bell-shaped flowers. [图片]How to Grow and Care Agave is not a difficult plant to grow. They’re slow-growing and dramatic and will even thrive on a bit of neglect. If you’re the type of person who likes to fuss with houseplants and water a lot, Agave is probably not the plant for you. If, however, you’re the type of person who likes to set it and forget it, and you have a sunny window, Agave might the way to go. Be aware that some of the large varieties will eventually outgrow your room (unless you have a large greenhouse), and Agave can be aggressive. They have irritating sap and sometimes very sharp thorns that can cause injuries to small children and even pets. In general, Agave do not need to be repotted every year. Most of the species commonly found in cultivation grow very slowly and will take a long time to outgrow their pot. It’s also best to handle your Agave as little as possible, since they do not like to be disturbed. When you do repot, refresh the spent soil with new potting mix and make sure the plant is firmly anchored in its pot. However, be careful not to pot the Agave too deep as that will encourage stem rot during the growing season. When repotting, use a fast-draining cacti or succulent mix. Do not use a mix that will become soggy or hold water. Origin Native to Mexico (Sonora).

Scientific Name Aeschynanthus speciosus Hook. [图片]Common Names Basket Plant, Lipstick Plant, Lipstick Vine Synonyms Aeschynanthus aucklandiae, Aeschynanthus splendens, Trichosporum speciosum [图片]Scientific Classification Family: Gesneriaceae Genus: Aeschynanthus Flower Color: Red with purple calyces Bloom Time: Mid summer to early winter Description Aeschynanthus speciosus is perhaps the most spectacular species within its genus. Its dark green leaves are carried along the stems in pairs or whorls of three, but there are 4 to 8 leaves at the stem tip, where they surround a cluster of 6 to 20 flowers. The leaves are up to 4 inches (10 cm) long and up to 1.6 inches (4 cm) wide and their tips are more sharply pointed than their bases. The green calyx sheathes only a portion of the flower, which may be up to 4 inches (10 cm) long. Both calyx and corolla are slightly hairy. The flowers are orange with the inside of the mouth orange-yellow and with a dark red bar across the lower lobes which also have scarlet borders. It normally has a summertime flowering season indoors and individual flowers last for only two or three days. [图片]How to Grow and Care Aeschynanthus are perfect as hanging or trailing plants. They require high humidity and warmth throughout the growing season, as well as strong (but not direct) light. After the season is over, cut the trailing stems back in preparation for another year—otherwise, it will tend toward leginess. Do not spray plants in bloom. These are perfect for a greenhouse, sunroom or conservatory. Repotting depends on your container choice. For hanging plants, you should repot in the beginning of every growing season. You can keep the plant in the same basket year after year, but you’ll still need to refresh the soil and, if the plant has become too large, divide it. You can pot the division up separately. If you’re growing in a container, repot either annually or every other year, depending on the size of the plant. Take cuttings in the spring, when the plant resumes normal growth. To successfully root cuttings, use a rooting hormone and provide bottom heat or use a covered rooting container. Take a cutting with several leaves and a length of stem. Strip away the bottom one or two sets of leaves to expose one or two growing nodes. Dip these into rooting hormone (if you’re using it), then bury the cutting and the exposed nodes into a clean potting mix… – See more at. Origin It is native primarily to Southeast Asia (the Malay peninsula, Java and Borneo island).
