Scientific Name Ranunculus peltatus Schrank [图片]Common Names Pond Water Crowfoot Synonyms Batrachium dichotomum, Batrachium elongatum, Batrachium floribundum, Batrachium langei, Batrachium peltatum, Batrachium pseudofluitans, Batrachium triphyllos, Batrachium truncatum, Ranunculus capillaceus, Ranunculus carinatus, Ranunculus floribundus, Ranunculus triphyllos Scientific Classification Family: Ranunculaceae Subfamily: Ranunculoideae Tribe: Ranunculeae Genus: Ranunculus [图片]Flower Color: White and yellow Bloom Time: June to September Description Ranunculus peltatus is a herbaceous perennial or sometimes annual plant. It has two different leaf types, broad rounded floating leaves, up to 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter with three to seven shallow lobes, and finely divided thread-like submerged leaves. The flowers are white with a yellow center, up to 0.8 inch (2 cm) in diameter, with five petals. [图片]How to Grow and Care Growing Ranunculus flowers starts with planted roots or tubers. Often called Ranunculus bulbs, tubers are different but have similar structures and purposes to the more common bulb. Plant the bulbs or tubers in fall for a glorious spring display. Growing Ranunculus flowers requires well-drained soil and full sun for best results. Soak the tubers and then plant then with the roots or fingers pointed downward at a depth of 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm), depending on the size of the bulbs. It is an easy flower to grow. Care of Ranunculus to ensure yearly displays may require that you pull out the tubers at the end of the season. Allow the foliage to almost completely die back and then dig out the tubers. Lay them in a cool, dry place to evaporate all the moisture from the bulbs. Store the tubers in a dark location until spring and then start them indoors in pots. Replant outside when all danger of frost is passed and the first true leaves are evident. Origin Native to Europe, southwestern Asia and northern Africa.

Scientific Name Rafflesia kerrii Meijer [图片]Scientific Classification Family: Rafflesiaceae Genus: Rafflesia [图片]Flower Color: Red Bloom Time: During the dry season Description Rafflesia kerrii is a parasite to the wild grapes of the genus Tetrastigma, but only the flowers are visible. Small buds appear along the trunk and roots of the host, which after 9 months open the giant flowers. After just one week the flower dies. It seems to be flowering seasonally, as flowers are only reported during the dry season, from January to March, and more rarely till July. The red flowers is up to 3 feet (90 cm) and smell awfully of rotten meat to attract flies for pollination. Hardiness USDA hardiness zone 13a to 13b: from 60 °F (+15.6 °C) to 70 °F (21.1 °C). [图片]How to Grow and Care The Rafflesia is in serious danger of extinction as the rain forest is burned and cleared for crop production and urban growth. The buds are also harvested and sold because locals believe they have medicinal properties if consumed. The plant has never been cultivated in captivity and it only grows on the tetrastigma vine, so its survival is seriously threatened. Pollination is rare because most locations contain only male flowers or female flowers. In order for pollination to occur, the fly must land on the male flower and then take the pollen to the female flower. If pollination occurs, the flower produces a globular, smooth-skinned fruit measuring up to 5 inches (13 cm) in diameter. It contains thousands of seeds. Birds and squirrels enjoy eating the fruit and help to spread the Rafflesia seeds through their eliminations. Origin Native to the rainforest of southern Thailand and peninsular Malaysia, with the most famous population in the Khao Sok National Park.

Scientific Name Rafflesia arnoldii R. Br. [图片]Common Names Corpse Flower Synonyms Rafflesia titan Scientific Classification Family: Rafflesiaceae Genus: Rafflesia [图片]Flower Color: Reddish-brown Bloom Time: Flowers can appear at any time, though blooms tend to be slightly more frequent between November and January Description Rafflesia arnoldii is a species of flowering plant noted for producing the largest individual flower on earth. The flower grows up to 3.3 feet (1 m) in diameter. Flowers emerge from very large, cabbage-like, maroon or magenta buds up to 12 inches (30 cm) wide. Despite being plants, they do not photosynthesize, have no roots, have no leaves, and don’t at all seem like plants. It can only be seen outside the host plant when it is ready to reproduce. Perhaps the only part that is identifiable as distinctly plant-like are the flowers, though even these are unusual since they attain massive proportions, have a reddish-brown coloration, and stink of rotting flesh. This scent attracts insects such as flies which then pollinate the rare plant. [图片]How to Grow and Care The Rafflesia is in serious danger of extinction as the rain forest is burned and cleared for crop production and urban growth. In the garden, Ipomoeas need moderately fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Provide shelter from wind. Prune climbing species in spring. Under glass, provide full light with protection from the hottest sun. Water freely and fertilize monthly during the growing season, but water sparingly in winter. Climbers and trailing species need support. Chip seeds with a knife, scrape with sandpaper, or soak in water for 24 hours before sowing at 64° F (18° C) in spring. Root softwood cuttings of perennials or shrubs in spring or summer, or take semi-ripe cuttings in summer. Scientific Name Aster tataricus L.f. [图片]Common Names Tatarian Aster, Tartarian Aster, Tatarian Daisy, Tatarinow’s Aster Synonyms Aster fauriei, Aster nakaii, Aster rhomboideus, Aster tataricus var. tataricus Scientific Classification Family: Asteraceae Tribe: Astereae Genus: Aster [图片]Flower Color: Deep lavender to blue rays and yellow centers Bloom Time: Autumn Description Aster tataricus is an impressive, stately perennial with a flowering height of up to 6 feet (1.8 m). Distinctive paddle-shaped, lower leaves are up to 24 inches (60 cm) long and up to 6 inches (15 cm) wide, but leaves are significantly smaller in size higher up on the plant. Small but abundant flowers, up to 1 inch (2.5 cm) across, with deep lavender to blue rays and yellow centers appear in flat-topped clusters in autumn. A late blooming aster that still looks fresh at time of first frost. [图片]How to Grow and Care Divide mature plants in spring, just as the new shoots begin to grow. This should be done every few years to avoid crowding of plants. As with many other flowering plants, dead head (cut back spent flowers) to make room for newer blossoms. This will extend the health and flowering of your plants. Be sure to dead head early on in the blooming season. Blooming will be reduced if done too late. This will also restrain unwanted reseeding which will cause plant overcrowding. Remember, Asters are prone to mildew so be careful to plant them in areas with good circulation and good sun exposure. As with other flowering plants, do not allow water to saturate leaves. Be sure to water at the plant’s roots to prevent mildew and mold. Drip irrigation and utilization of a soaker hose work very well in watering these plants. Origin Native to southern Siberia, northern China, Mongolia, Korea and Japan, where it grows in meadows and wetlands.
