Scientific Name Euphorbia myrsinites L.
Common Names Myrtle Spurge, Myrtle Euphorbia, Donkey Tail Spruge, Donkey Tail, Blue Spurge, Broad-Leaved Glaucous Spurge, Creeping Spruge Synonyms Euphorbia myrsinites subsp. myrsinites, Endoisila myrsinites, Euphorbion myrsinitum, Galarhoeus myrsinites, Murtekias myrsinites, Tithymalus myrsinites Scientific Classification Family: Euphorbiaceae Subfamily: Euphorbioideae Tribe: Euphorbieae Subtribe: Euphorbiinae Genus: Euphorbia
Description Euphorbia myrsinites is an attractive low growing succulent evergreen perennial. It has sprawling stems growing up to 16 inches (40 cm) long. The leaves are spirally arranged, fleshy, pale glaucous bluish-green, up to 1 inch (2.5 cm) long. The flowers and their subtending bracts are initially greenish-yellow but deepen to a red hue by summer.
How to Grow and Care Euphorbias are very easy to care for. They require a little pampering to become established, but once they are, they are self-sufficient. In fact, more die from too much care and watering than from neglect. Euphorbias need well-draining soil and lots of sunlight. They are not particular about soil pH, but they cannot tolerant wet soil. Unlike most succulents, Euphorbia does not handle long periods of drought well. It may need weekly watering during the summer. Water whenever the soil is dry several inches below the surface. Water deeply, but don’t let them sit in wet soil, which can cause root rot. Add some organic matter or fertilizer to the planting hole. If you are growing them in containers or your soil is poor, feed with a half-strength fertilizer monthly. Origin Native to southeastern Europe and Asia Minor, from Italy east through the Balkans to the Crimea and Turkey.

Scientific Name Echinopsis chamaecereus H. Friedrich & Glaetzle
Common Names Peanut Cactus Synonyms Chamaecereus sylvestrii, Chamaecereus silvestrii, Lobivia silvestri, Cereus silvestrii Scientific Classification Family: Cactaceae Subfamily: Cactoideae Tribe: Trichocereeae Genus: Echinopsis
Flower Color: Orange-red Bloom Time: Spring Description Echinopsis chamaecereus is a branched cactus, up to 6 inches (10 cm) tall, with many crowded finger-like stems. The pale green stems are up to 6 inches (15 cm) long and up to 0.5 inches (1.2 cm) in diameter. Blooms in late spring and produces several flushes of about 2 inches (5 cm) wide orange-red flowers.
How to Grow and Care If you can grow cacti and succulents successfully, you can likely grow the Echinopsis species without too much trouble. Like many cacti, they prefer a drying period between waterings, even to the point where they slightly wilt. When you water, however, you should water deeply. The plant will noticeably plump up. It’s imperative that the cactus is not exposed to prolonged dampness and sitting water. Never let your cactus sit in a dish of water. Lastly, make sure to fertilizer during the growing season for the best results. Echinopsis can be easily rooted from offsets, which tend to cluster around the base of the mother plant. Cut offsets close to the stem, at the narrowest possible place. When rooting cacti from cuttings, let the fresh cutting dry out slightly on a paper towel and cut the cacti at the narrowest place possible. After a few days to a few weeks, depending on the size of the cut surface, the cut surface should have dried out and formed a callous, or slightly rough opening. Once the callous has formed, place the cutting in a rooting mixture of fast-draining cacti soil. Origin Native to Argentina (Tucumán).

Scientific Name Echinocactus grusonii Hildm.
Common Names Golden Barrel Cactus, Golden Barrel, Golden Ball Cactus, Golden Ball, Mother-in-Law’s-Cushion, Mother-in-Law’s-Seat Scientific Classification Family: Cactaceae Subfamily: Cactoideae Tribe: Cacteae Genus: Echinocactus
Flower Color: Yellow Bloom Time: Summer Description Echinocactus grusonii is a cactus with single slowly growing globe-shaped stem that became elongated (barrel-shaped) in maturity, up to 3 feet (90 cm) in height and spread. Cultivated usually only grow to around 12 inches (30 cm). Stem is pale green and heavily ribbed with numerous areoles sprouting radial, yellow spines. Small yellow flowers, up to 2 inches (5 cm) wide, appear in summer around the crown of the plant, but only after twenty years or so.
How to Grow and Care Overall, these are very attractive cacti for dish gardens or indoor display. A collection of them is especially attractive, as they look like a collection of balls tossed upon the ground. It’s critical, however, to never let these cactus be exposed to prolonged periods in water, or even very high humidity. They will suffer from rot in the presence of humidity. Echinocactus are vulnerable to pests including aphids, mealy bugs, scale, and white fly. If possible, identify the infestation as early as possible and treat with the leave toxic option. Barrel Cactus are typically propagated by seed. Mature cactus will bloom in the summer with flowers that grow in whorls around the top of the plant. To seed a cactus, plant the seeds shallowly in a cactus mix and keep them warm and very slightly moist. It’s best to repot in the beginning of the growing season, or summer… – See more at: How to Grow and Care for Echinocactus. You can sow Golden Barrel Cactus seeds outdoors in warm climates, but sowing them indoors is easier and will result in a higher germination rate. Expect the seeds to germinate in one to two months. Origin Native to Mexico (Querétaro).

Scientific Name Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench
Common Names Eastern Purple Coneflower, Purple Coneflower, Black Samson, Hedgehog Coneflower, Purple Coneflower, Purple Daisy, Snakeroot, Kansas Snakeroot, Scurvy Root, Indian Head, Comb Flower, Black Susans, Echinacée Pourpre (French), Roter Scheinsonnenhut (German), Echinacija Purpurovaja (Transliterated Russian), Röd Rudbeckia (Swedish) Synonyms Rudbeckia purpurea (basionym), Rudbeckia purpurea var. purpurea, Brauneria purpurea, Echinacea intermedia, Echinacea purpurea var. purpurea, Echinacea serotina, Echinacea speciosa, Helichroa purpurea Scientific Classification Family: Asteraceae Tribe: Heliantheae Genus: Echinacea
Flower Color: Light purple and brown Bloom Time: Spring to late summer Description Echinacea purpurea is a herbaceous perennial with coarsely hairy, ovate or lance-shaped leaves, up to 47 inches (1.2 m) tall and up to 10 inches (25 cm) wide at maturity. Depending on the climate, it blooms throughout spring to late summer. The solitary flower-heads are up to 4.7 inches (12 cm) across with slightly reflexed, light purple rays and brown central disk. Its individual flowers (florets) within the flower head are hermaphroditic, having both male and female organs on each flower. It is pollinated by butterflies and bees.
How to Grow and Care Coneflowers are often listed as drought tolerant, but they will do much better with regular water. I leave the plants standing through winter, to feed the birds. Shearing them back in the spring will result in bushier plants that bloom longer into the season. Deadheading is the primary maintenance required with Coneflowers. They are prolific bloomers and keeping them deadheaded will keep them in bloom all summer. Luckily each flower remains in bloom for several weeks. Flowers start blooming from the top of the stem. As the initial flower fades, more side shoots and buds will form along the stem. Keep the plants deadheaded and you’ll keep getting more flowers. If you don’t want to start your own seeds, there are plenty of varieties available for purchase as plants, especially through mail order. Plants can also be divided or grown from stem cuttings. Coneflower can be planted in either spring or fall. Be sure to allow for good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases. Origin Native to eastern North America.

Scientific Name Echeveria globulosa Moran
Scientific Classification Family: Crassulaceae Subfamily: Sedoideae Tribe: Sedeae Subtribe: Sedinae Genus: Echeveria
Flower Color: Оrange-yellow Bloom Time: Spring to fall Description Echeveria globulosa is a cute succulent plant with compact rosettes with fleshy, pointed leaves. Spreads easily to form a low growing, compact clump or cluster. The rosettes are up to 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter and the cluster won’t grow taller than 6 inches (15 cm). Leaves are a pale blue and can be blushed with pink. Brightly colored orange-yellow flowers grow on short stems above the rosettes.
How to Grow and Care Most of the common Echeveria species are not complicated succulents to grow, provided you follow a few basic rules. First, be careful never to let water sit in the rosette as it can cause rot or fungal diseases that will kill the plant. Additionally, remove dead leaves from the bottom of the plant as it grows. These dead leaves provide a haven for pests, and Echeveria are susceptible to mealy bugs. As with all succulents, careful watering habits and plenty of light will help ensure success. Repot as needed, preferably during the warm season. To repot a succulent, make sure the soil is dry before repotting, then gently remove the pot. Knock away the old soil from the roots, making sure to remove any rotted or dead roots in the process. Treat any cuts with a fungicide. Place the plant in its new pot and backfill with potting soil, spreading the roots out as you repot. Leave the plant dry for a week or so, then begin to water lightly to reduce the risk of root rot. Most Echeveria can be easily propagated from leaf cuttings, although a few are better from seeds or stem cuttings. To propagate a leaf cutting, place the individual leaf in a succulent or cacti mix and cover the dish until the new plant sprouts. Origin Native to Mexico (Oaxaca).

Scientific Name Urtica dioica L.
Common Names Nettle, Common Nettle, European Nettle, Giant Nettle, Stinging Nettle Synonyms Urtica dioica subsp. dioica, Urtica dioica var. dioica, Urtica galeopsifolia, Urtica tibetica Scientific Classification Family: Urticaceae Genus: Urtica
Flower Color: Green Bloom Time: May to September Description Urtica dioica is a dioecious herbaceous perennial with straight stem up to 5 feet (1.5 m) tall. The leaves are heart-shaped, up to 6 inches (15 cm) long. The leaves and stems are very hairy with non-stinging hairs. Flowers are very small, greenish, sometimes tinged pinkish, inconspicuous, up to 0.08 inches (2 mm) long, with 4 tiny sepals and no petals. Individual flowers are either male or female, but only one sex is to be found on any one plant so both male and female plants must be grown if seed is required.
How to Grow and Care Nettles prefers rich soil with good moisture content and especially favors the edges of streams or nutrient-dense pastures. Nettle seeds are tiny, light dependant germinators that can be started indoors or out. However, select your location carefully as Nettles are very hardy and can spread quickly with the right conditions. Nettle can be assisted with stratification, but it is not necessary. To start, tamp the small seeds lightly into the soil or cover with a thin layer of soil (0.25 inch/6 mm). If starting indoors, sow in flats in late winter and transplant in early spring. Space plants approximately 8 inches (20 cm) apart. If direct sowing, seed in spring and thin as desired and plant rows 1 inch (2.5 cm) apart. It recommended to find a permanent spot with rich, moist conditions a little away from (or on the periphery of) your other herbs. Origin Native to Europe, Asia, northern Africa and North America.
