Many people are under the impression that the only easy way to grow mushrooms is with a kit, but this is not true. All a kit really provides is sterile substrate, usually a log, and mushroom spawn. Many garden supply stores and nurseries supply mushroom spawn, and you can collect and sterilize your own substrate. Growing mushrooms without a kit may be a bit more time-consuming, but the end result is worth the extra effort. [图片]Step 1 Fill a large pot with water and bring it to a boil over high heat on your stove. Place the wheat straw into the pot and push it below the water, using a large spoon or spatula. Bring the water back to a boil, reduce the heat to medium and cover the pot. Step 2 Allow the straw to simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally to keep it from sticking to the bottom of the pot and burning. Remove a few pieces of straw and allow them to cool so you can check how tender they are. They should be a fairly soft consistency, not unlike well-cooked pasta. If the straw is still hard, continue simmering until it reaches the desired consistency. Step 3 Place the colander in your sink and pour the straw and water into it to drain the straw. Allow the straw to cool to room temperature. While the straw is cooling, roll out a 1- to 2-foot length of plastic wrap on your table. Step 4 Spread an even layer of straw over the plastic wrap once it reaches room temperature. Sprinkle the mushroom spawn over the prepared straw and press the entire thing together to form a tightly rolled log. Wrap the plastic wrap around the log. [图片]Step 5 Place the wrapped log of straw in a warm, dark place. Make three to five slits across the top of the log. Do not water the log until you see a white substance form on the straw. Once this appears, water sparingly every other day or as necessary to keep the straw moist. Depending on the species you're growing, you should have mushrooms in one to two months.

Prized for its taste and texture, the morel mushroom grows wild in many areas of the United States. This quality fungus emerges naturally in the springtime along sections of decomposing trees and rich, loamy patches of soil. Until recently, this type of mushroom defied attempts to cultivate it in a garden environment, making it necessary to search through the woods to find wild specimens. Propagating morel mushrooms with purchased spawn provides an interesting activity that provides an edible produce. The process of growing this type of mushroom requires careful preparation and patience. [图片]Step 1 Prepare the site for your morel mushroom garden. Select a shady spot that measures approximately four feet by four feet. Choose a location that does not receive animal or foot traffic. Remove all existing vegetation and debris. Turn the top three to four inches of soil to loosen the surface. Spread equal amounts of sand, gypsum and peat moss over the surface of your soil, creating a layer about an inch thick. Work these into your loosened topsoil to create a rich, sandy medium. Step 2 Scatter a fine layer of wood ashes over the prepared soil. Morel mushrooms grow naturally in forested areas after fires, thriving on nutrients in the ashes. Step 3 Plant your morel spawn into your prepared soil by mixing and spreading the substance according to the package instructions. Sprinkle small pieces of hardwood chips and bark over your planted mushroom bed. In their native habitat, morel mushrooms grow among elms, ashes and apple trees, so try to use those types of hardwood. Keep the area slightly moist. [图片]Step 4 Mark and protect your mushroom garden by placing gardening stakes along the outside edges of your site. Pound the stakes about halfway into the soil and tie strings or ribbons around the stakes to avoid accidentally walking over the area. Mushrooms are fungi that have very different growing requirements from those of green plants. Mushrooms come in many varieties, but they have similar growing needs. The easiest mushrooms for new growers to cultivate are oyster mushrooms, according to the National Sustainable Agriculture Information Service. White button and shiitake mushrooms are two other popular choices. Mushrooms may be grown in almost any container. With the right growing medium and conditions, you can have delicious and fresh mushrooms for your culinary needs. [图片]Step 1 Fill your container with hardwood chips, chopped cereal straws, such as wheat, or shredded corn cobs. Mushrooms contain no chlorophyll, the substance that makes leaves green, and must obtain their nutrients from their growing medium. Step 2 Moisten the growing medium with water, keeping it warm and consistently damp. Turn it often with a hand-held rake to make sure the mixture has adequate oxygen. The growing medium will reach temperatures of 145 degrees. This unique compost contains the nutrients mushrooms need to grow. Step 3 Place the container with the composted growing medium on a heating pad to keep the temperature of the growing medium about 70 degrees Fahrenheit. [图片]Step 4 Sprinkle the mushroom spawn over the growing medium. Mushrooms don't grow by seed but by spawn, or microscopic spores. One mushroom can produce up to 16 billion spores according to Fresh Mushrooms. Step 5 Keep your container in an area of your house that receives little to no sunlight, such as a basement or even a closet. The location should be easily accessible as the growing mushrooms need supervision. Step 6 Lower the temperature of the soil to between 55 and 60 degrees F once the spawn has rooted. You will notice filaments spreading through the growing medium. This takes about three weeks according to Gardening Know How. Step 7 Cover the spawn with one inch of garden soil. Lay a damp cloth over the soil and the entire container. Keep the cloth and the soil damp, but not wet. This will provide your mushrooms with the humidity and moisture they need to grow. Step 8 Harvest your mushrooms when the cap has separated from the stem. It takes between 17 and 25 days for mushrooms to mature, according to Fresh Mushrooms.

Extravagant, rare and revered by culinary aficionados throughout the world, truffles are a pungent fungus that grows around the roots of hazelnut and other types of trees. Truffle varieties include white truffles and black truffles. To grow white truffles, you must purchase inoculated trees from a truffle farmer or a garden supplier that deals in fungi. White truffles are challenging to start, but when they become successfully established, you will reap the rewards of this delicacy for years to come. The primary climates where truffles can grow in the United States are the temperate regions of Washington, Oregon and Northern California. [图片]Step 1 Choose a plot. Inoculated trees need be planted at least 4 feet from other plants and at least 20 feet from other trees. If you are planting several trees, plant rows spaced 12 feet apart with trees spaced 5 to 7 feet apart. Step 2 Test the soil. Test kits are available from garden suppliers. Truffles need an alkaline soil with a pH between 7.5 and 7.9. Step 3 Till the soil deeply. Use a rake for small plots and a rototiller for large plots. Add a 3-inch layer of compost. If your test results were below the requisite pH, add 8 oz. of hydrated lime per yard for each number the pH needs to be raised. Till the soil again to mix in the compost and lime. Step 4 Plant sapling trees in early spring, while they are still dormant. Dig holes large enough to accommodate the roots, using a shovel. Remove the trees from their pots and insert them into the holes. Backfill the remaining space with soil and water thoroughly. [图片]Step 5 Water your trees regularly to keep the soil moist. Do not add any fertilizer, compost or other soil additives for at least one year. Truffles will not begin growing for at least five years, perhaps longer. You may see bulges in the ground when truffles begin to grow. Pigs and trained dogs can also find truffles. Step 6 Weed the plot regularly. Step 7 Harvest truffles by carefully digging around them with a rigid stick.

While commercial mushroom farms raise and package large quantities of mushrooms for consumers, packaged mushroom gardens give individual gardeners the opportunity to raise a small, indoor mushroom crop. These mushroom-growing kits include everything you need to start your own small mushroom garden. Although you can purchase one of these ready-made kits from Internet suppliers and gardening centers, you can also put together the necessary ingredients to make your own mushroom-growing kit. Use this for your own gardening hobby or present this homemade kit as a gift for a friend. [图片]Putting Together Your Kit Step 1 Obtain a broad, shallow container or recycle a used one for this purpose. A large casserole dish or a plastic storage bin works well for building a mushroom garden. Step 2 Mix equal amounts of sterile compost, potting soil and peat, filling your container with a 2-to-3-inch layer of this rich medium. Reserve about 1/4 cup of this mixture in a sealed envelope. Smooth the top of your soil mix with a large, wooden spoon, removing any ridges or dips, creating a uniform surface. Step 3 Gather mushroom spores for your garden kit. Known as spore printing, collecting spores allows you to propagate new mushrooms from harvested species. Purchase only fresh mushrooms from your grocery store to use for this purpose. Cut off the stems and place your mushroom caps, gills down, on a piece of clean, white paper. Wait 12 hours for the mushrooms to release the majority of the miniscule spores. Carefully transfer the spores to a sealable envelope for storage. Keep these cool and dry. [图片]Step 4 Tear off a sheet or two of clear plastic wrap to place over the top of your container. Poke several holes in the plastic wrap to allow adequate airflow. Complete your mushroom garden kit with a plastic spray bottle for misting the soil. Your kit is now ready for planting or giving away as a gift. Include growing instructions with a gift. Planting and Growing Your Mushrooms Step 1 Plant your mushroom garden by misting the surface of your soil with a fine spray of water until it glistens. Scatter your tiny spores over the surface of the damp soil. Sprinkle the reserved 1/4 cup of medium over the top of your spores, barely covering them with this fine substance. Spray the surface again to create even dampness and place your plastic wrap over the top of your container. Step 2 Put your planted mushroom garden in a dimly lit area, such as a closet or storage cabinet. Maintain the temperature in your closet near 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep the soil slightly damp to the touch by spraying it every few days. Step 3 Look for the small mushrooms to appear within one to two weeks. Begin harvesting them as they reach maturity to allow space for new ones to grow. Mushroom gardens often continue supplying fresh produce for six to eight weeks.
