It grows best in sun to light shade. It is sometimes referred to as vanilla grass because of the aroma emitted when it is cut – the smell of fresh hay with a hint of vanilla. This sweet, fresh hay smell comes from the substance coumarin, also found in sweet woodruff. Sweet vernal plants flower earlier than most other grasses, from early to mid-spring, with dense yellow clusters which are a favorite food plant for the larvae of brown and skipper butterflies. If you are one of the haters and looking for ways to get rid of Spanish moss, then this article should help.[图片]About Spanish Moss Control It is important to note that while Spanish moss will not technically harm a tree, it can present a threat, in addition to being an eyesore. Trees with Spanish moss can become overly heavy when moist, which can strain branches. As a result, the branches become weakened and are more prone to breaking. There is no surefire chemical treatment to aid in Spanish moss removal. In fact, the best way to kill the moss is to remove it as it grows by hand. And even after thorough removal, inevitably the Spanish moss may still grow back. Or it may return after being carried by birds. That being said, you can normally reduce the growth rate of Spanish moss simply by providing adequate fertilizer and water to your trees.[图片]How to Get Rid of Spanish Moss Since it can be such a pain and time-consuming job when it comes to killing Spanish moss, it is probably better (and worth the money) to call in an arborist or other tree professional to do the work for you, especially for larger trees in the landscape. In addition to hand removal, the most cost-effective method of Spanish moss control is by spraying the trees with Spanish moss herbicide. Again, professionals are the best choices for this, as they are more equipped for handling and spraying large trees that would not be feasible to the typical homeowner.[图片]There are generally three types of sprays used for killing Spanish moss: copper, potassium and baking soda. While all are reasonably safe to use and may even provide additional benefits, some may present challenges too. Copper Copper sulphate is one of the most recommended methods of Spanish moss removal. Copper is a common ingredient in most dry fertilizers and is an antifungal treatment. That being said, precautions must be taken when using this method to get rid of Spanish moss. Copper is the slowest solution, but it is the most thorough. As a systemic spray, it is deemed effective in targeting and killing Spanish moss. However, copper-based sprays can cause damage to tender growth on trees and any overspray may become potentially harmful to the surrounding landscape. It is recommended that trees be sprayed before budding out or later in the season. This is an ideal solution for use in more open areas too, rather than near houses because it has a tendency to stain. You should also check the label to make sure it can safely be applied to the trees with Spanish moss you want to treat. You can purchase premixed copper sulfate sprays or mix your own using one part copper sulfate and one part lime to 10 parts water.[图片]Potassium Using potassium for spraying trees with Spanish moss is another method that quickly kills this bromeliad. Potassium is considered a contact killer. So, for example, if your tree is sprayed in the morning, the Spanish moss should be dead by that afternoon – or within a couple days for certain. While potassium kills the moss, it won’t harm your tree. In fact, it’s a root fertilizer that is beneficial for the tree.[图片]Baking Soda Baking soda is considered the safest solution (besides hand removal) for killing Spanish moss. But, again, there are things to keep in mind when choosing this method to get rid of Spanish moss. Baking soda has a high salt content, so it shouldn’t be used on trees with new, tender growth, as this can cause damage. Like potassium spray, baking soda is also a contact killer and very effective. Prior to use, it is recommended that you physically remove as much of the moss as possible and then spray the affected tree(s). There is also a commercial product called Bio Wash (add ¼ cup of baking soda or potassium bicarbonate per gallon of spray) that is said to work well.

There are over 100 species of sedge plants. What is sedge? These grass-like plants are drought tolerant, easy to grow and practically maintenance free. There are many types of sedge to choose from, but native sedge plants offer the opportunity to replenish and renew natural landscapes while giving the gardener a hardy plant made for the region. Whichever species you opt for, growing sedge plants in the garden brings texture and movement to any area of the landscape.[图片]What is Sedge? At first glance, one might assume sedges are grasses. They are not and are held in the genus Carex. Sedges span both native varieties and hybridized versions. They are useful in moist areas, such as around ponds, but there are also types of sedge that thrive in dry regions. Both ornamental and native sedge plants produce tiny seeds which feed some bird species, and many animals use the foliage to line and create nests. Sedge plants have the characteristic strappy leaves similar to many grasses, and just like grass, they reproduce from seed and rhizomes. Sedge crowds out other invasive species and comes in many hues and heights. It is an evergreen plant that does much of its growing in the cooler seasons and may go dormant in hot temperatures.[图片]Growing Sedge Plants Most nurseries have some varieties of sedge on hand. If you are looking for a particular species, you may need to order seed or starts. Seeded plants will take a couple of seasons to get to useable size but they grow as easily as grass seed. It is best to source native varieties through a grower, as some of these plants are endangered and harvesting from the wild is prohibited. The majority of sedge types grow in either sun or shade. Cool zones should plant in sun while warmer locations will find better production if the plants are situated in slightly shady parts of the garden. Additionally, some varieties are xeric or require dry locations, while others are hydric and need to be constantly moist. Sedges that are mesic have the broadest tolerance of both dry and moist conditions.[图片]Growing sedge plants in mesic soil sets the odds for you on big beautiful plants in almost any region. They rarely need fertilizer, the plants can be easily moved and they grow rapidly and can even be used as a turf. Sedge plants take to occasional mowing in lawn situations and have the advantage of requiring little further attention, unlike traditional turf grass, which needs plenty of added nitrogen and may get weedy. When fertilizing, feed the plant in early summer with a light nitrogen plant food. Irrigate plants in the sun at least 3 times during the month. For those plants in shadier areas, irrigate just once per month unless your region is in acute drought, in which case water 2 times per month. Suspend watering in fall and winter.[图片]If you wish, cut back sedges after they have bloomed to preserve a more tidy appearance. You can mow the plants but use a sharp blade and mow no lower than 2/3 the plant’s height. The foliage is a wide grassy blade with a swath of deep purplish-red along the edges. Fountain grass plants may get two to five feet tall, in a clumping habit. This is a really versatile plant that tolerates full sun to partial shade, walnut proximity, and moist to slightly dry soils. Of all the ornamental grasses, of which there are many, purple fountain grass (Pennisetum setaceum ‘Rubrum’) is probably one of the most popular. The purple or burgundy-colored foliage and soft, fuzzy-like blooms (which are followed by purplish seedheads) make a bold statement in the garden—on their own or grouped with other plantings. Growing purple fountain grass is easy and requires little maintenance once established.[图片]About Purple Fountain Grass While purple fountain grass is known as a perennial, it is actually considered a tender perennial. This ornamental grass cannot survive cold winters and is hardy only in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 9 and warmer (though in Zones 7-8 it can sometimes reappear given adequate winter protection). Therefore, it is important that this be a consideration prior to planting purple fountain grass, as the likelihood of its return each year in zones 6 or lower is slim to none. In fact, in cooler regions the plant is normally treated as an annual instead. However, it is still possible to enjoy this plant year after year when grown in a container and brought indoors for overwintering. You can cut it back to about three inches or so and then place it either in a sunny window in a cool area of the home or simply place it in your basement. Keep the plant moist, not soggy, watering it about once a month. Once the threat of freezing weather and frost has passed in spring, you can set the purple fountain grass back outdoors.[图片]Grow Purple Fountain Grass Growing purple fountain grass is easy. Although it can be planted nearly anytime, spring is the most suitable time for planting. These plants need to be placed in a sunny location with well-draining soil. Since mature plants can reach about four feet tall and just as wide, they should be given plenty of room in the garden, spacing additional plants at least three to five feet apart. Dig a hole both deep and wide enough to accommodate the roots and then water your purple fountain grass thoroughly. Although nor required, you can give it an annual feeding with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer in spring to help stimulate new growth. You should also cut it back in fall prior to bringing the plant indoors or in late winter/early spring for those left outdoors in suitable climates.
